Chuck Taylor I surely like. Basic, honest footwear.
I picked up a pair of Incontinence pants Ransom for 99 pence last week.
Couldn't get on with New Balance.
Converse I still wear at least every other day.
B.D.Baggie university stripe button-down
'Lord Jeff' Shetland Argyle slipover
Navy RL chinos
Mustard-coloured Viyella socks
Sand Astorflex
To a village hall craft fair yesterday:
White Arran jumper,
Older JSAC Madras long sleeve - light blue base with light olive and burgundy/plum check.
Dark olive chino's
Chups Fair Isle socks - burgundy/olive with some orange.
Paraboot Avignon, Shell Cordovan Col. 8.
I need more jumpers, been looking for some Shetlands in the various sales but I'm reluctant to buy anything as my weight is still in flux. Had a couple of bad weeks and have gained a bit - I'm about to have surgery next week too which will prevent me from doing much in the way of exercise for 2-3 weeks. After that, back on the weight-loss wagon I hope!
This a.m. - a brisk walk in a local park - back in Gloverall, with Brooks cashmere scarf, PRL check shirt, old M&S lambswool v-neck in stone, faded 501s and gleaming (no, not quite) white leather Converse. Lots of tats on everyone, busily discussing their drinking session on Saturday night. As Wodehouse once put it, albeit in a different context, 'Ye Gods - the proletariat'.
Today is newspaper production day, which is done from home these days. As such I am sporting grubby LL Bean chinos, a grey sweatshirt and a weary expression.
Couple weeks ago I had to attend an actual professional function, and it felt good to be in blazer, tie, white shirt, grey flannels and proper shoes. I skipped the pocket square because I've decided it makes me look like a prat.

Socks picking up the colours in the shirt.
Listening to Blossom at Ronnie Scott's.
Madras! Gant Indian in a bold blue/green/purple/pink. Three finger collar roll. Flap pocket. No logo.
Indigo 501s turned up
Clarks MiE sand db's
Failsworth Irish linen newsboy. Natural beige
Ecru denim trucker. Which I don't see as being particularly Ivy. But the sun was shining and I got caught up in the mood.
This morning, in bright sunshine: McLochland cable-knit chunky cardigan with Brooks pink and white candy stripe button-down and Levis.
'Lord Jeff' Fair Isle pullover
Dazzling white Brooks Brothers OCBD
Navy PRL chinos
Tan Walk Over dirty bucks with red brick sole
Had a lovely chat in a local antiques centre with a local lady married to a Finn about their glass.
Just a Pitlochry Shetland Argyle crew neck over a periwinkle blue Brooks button-down.
501s.
Yesterday for a walk along the Thames at Kingston and a drink in a riverside pub with dear Mrs W: dark green Vetra cotton suit, pink and green J Press madras shirt, off white linen Stetson cap and cleverly matching off white canvas ... sneakers, what else? Thus I wore a suit for the most casual of situations, effortlessly projecting cool indifference to anyone puzzling as to whether I was in some way connected with the greatest rock and roll band in the world and if so why was he drinking Japanese lager in Kingston on a Sunday afternoon.
Japanese lager must be one of the Ivyest of all beers.
501’s with small turn ups
BD Baggies white/blue/red small gingham ocbd
Burgundy weejuns
Navy unlined, unpadded cotton three button, slim lapel, single hook vent jacket by ADC (never heard of ‘em)
^ A nice look, Spendthrift. I think JFM would have approved. He learned to keep it simple.
The Japanese don’t really get on very well with alcohol. Consequently they perfected beers that are completely devoid of taste.
Rice wine? A Japanese post-graduate I knew at University had a hard head for whisky.
I will drink lager if decent bitter is unavailable and a pint of Asahi is acceptable on a hot day.
The Japanese are very keen on Scottish single malts and produce some decent ones of their own.
If Scotland ever votes 'Yes', it can kiss goodbye to all those single malts. They'll all go for export to Japan so that Grandpa and Granny MacSporran can carry on enjoying their handouts. Not to mention their many heroin addicts.
Radical development of the shortbread industry will be vital to their survival.
^ We'll just have to find somewhere else to park the nuclear subs.
Yes whisky is now produced worldwide and Japan has some decent ones of its own.
The rain it raineth, so, having just finished Alec Wilder's superb if technical book on American songwriters, I return to Whitney Balliett's pieces for the 'New Yorker'. Balliett was a superb critic. Later, I may waste a little more of my time not listening to hard bop.
Unco-ordinated but comfortable: Brooks Brothers red/green check button-down (unbuttoned) worn with ancient Alan Paine USA export to Detroit and Birmingham grey cashmere v-neck (I preferred the navy but it gave up the ghost and wound up in the cats basket: she sleeps, too, on Paul Stuart), USA-made L.L.Bean cords (not quite chocolate brown but getting there) and expensive German socks.
Virtually mid-May and I'm still in a Woolrich flannel shirt and heavy Paul Stuart sweater with shawl collar. The Nicholas Deakin boots I bought late last summer have proved a sound investment. They look not unlike a Clarks' Wallabee but are, I should think, more comfortable. I walked about a mile or so in them without suffering. At least as good as Astorflex desert boots, which have rubbed.
Called in at Oxfam where a pretty, doll-like blonde sold me an Ellington and a Getz on CD.
Thank heaven I didn't have to deal with the old sour-face of a manager(ess).
Now - where's An Unseen Scene?
Gurteen khakis
Beige/cream/red/blue Surcingle belt
Gant indigo/chambray over white T
White Sperry CVo's
Navy ball cap
Not interested in clothes wife asked if I'd intended to dress like an American golfer. Mixed feelings.
Invertere coat (still blowing a strong breeze)
Thrifted L.L.Bean polo shirt with pocket (with button - never seen one before - comes in handy)
Grey Russell Athletic sweatshirt
501s
Unremarkable socks (Falke)
Nicholas Deakin boots
Dress it up, dress it down.
My wife, bless her, will sometimes spot a nice roll on a collar or some unusual feature on a jacket before I do.
I had surgery on Monday (nothing major, joined the jewish fraternity on medical grounds) and have been feeling a bit tender most of the week. It was cool and breezy yesterday but I wanted to be in the garden:
Brown suede wool lined slippers
OG 107 fatigue pants (Uniqlo stylee)
Light grey marl t-shirt
Gloverall Pea-coat
I'm doing my best to keep up appearances, even if I am walking like John Wayne.
Ouch... I know the feeling, Tim... You poor lad...
Of course, the evidence is all circumstantial...
I also had the snip back in 1998. John Wayne... yup!
