Hold It Right There: The Pink Shirt

There's a lovely bit in Hewitt's book - was it Mark Timlin?  He wore a pink shirt and when he wore a pink shirt people said 'Stop It'.  It perhaps came from Gee or Lou Austin.
Hard as I tried with Brooks, I never quite got on with them.  The woman I was in love with back in 2012 was unimpressed.  She preferred a nice blue or denim shirt.
Can it be done?  Can it?  Seriously?

I love a pink Oxford. Not so much a Poplin though.

Yes. Always liked a bit of pink.
Think I’ve always had at least one or two button downs and polos on the go.
Resting them at the moment, as pink seems to be an ‘in’ colour for the male populace round here (mainly sweatshirts). But I’m sure that will pass and I will get them out again.

Had a nice Geoffrey Scott H/S BD from the IS, gave it to my Dad who ended up chucking it. Wish I'd kept it now.

Re: Hold It Right There: The Pink Shirt

I ordered a pink Makers from EBay, years ago, and never wore it. It was stiff and felt like the previous owner had washed it in a combo of starch and Bullseye Shellac. Just the other day, with nothing clean to wear, I put it on. I was wrong. It was simply an unworn old Makers and it softened over the course of one day. Now Hollywood is going to be beating a path to my door hoping to purchase the rights to that little story, I’m sure.

Re: Hold It Right There: The Pink Shirt

I love pink shirts and over the years I've received compliments from the ladies. I remember one Irish girl who thought I was 'bold' wearing pink and she said I displayed confidence in my sexuality in doing so!
My shirts range from Makers, Very old Hathaway, Ralph and even a cheap GAP. I also have a few short sleeve pink to deep red shirts and a Brooks Bengal stripe. They are an essential part of my 'collection'.

My Converse pink footwear (bought from TKMaxx Stax) have never been worn. I'm not that confident in my sexuality!

Re: Hold It Right There: The Pink Shirt

I’m also a lover of pink shirts especially in Oxford like Senor, I currently have a sero I bought as nos from O’Connells 10 or so years ago, it’s identical to one I bought from IS Richmond around ‘85, I think I’ll go for a Jakes if he makes more in pink oxford,
Pink converse Robbie ? , you sure ! haha

Re: Hold It Right There: The Pink Shirt

Many years ago i bought a pink sero NOS from O´Connells too. Think it was a 15 or 15,5.
What a happy man i was! But then the Al Bundy in me got told that they couldn´t find the shirt in the shop ...

Pink shirts? Absolutely!
And so true, the ladies like it a lot.

Re: Hold It Right There: The Pink Shirt

I have to confess, I probably parted with the shirt on the basis that the lady in question didn't like it.  Needless to say, the shirt would have lasted longer than my (six month) affair.
Now: a serious question: why will pink not work as a polo shirt?  I saw a pink London Fog polo shirt in a local charity shop just a few weeks ago.  Aside from the fact it was poly/cotton, the rather washed-out shade of pink had me moving rapidly toward the door.  I think I saw, in my mind's eye, John Simons looking at me sadly and shaking his head, as my late father once did when I told him I'd just invested in a particular Sonny Rollins album.

(I might be mistaken, but I think our Gibson might favour pink from time to time, perhaps with a knitted tie).

Re: Hold It Right There: The Pink Shirt

I'll defend the pink polo. It just has to be VERY casual. Untucked. With shorts. Boat or driving shoes, maybe CVOs.  Also the more pale the better, I think. Probably leans more prep or riviera style than Ivy? I'm under no illusion that the above would get a knowing nod from that mythical passing Ivy fan we're all worried about.

Tuck it in and pair it with chinos and a ball cap and you're in golf caddy territory.

Re: Hold It Right There: The Pink Shirt

There was a time when the pink (Lacoste) polo also meant "Casual". At least lots of them were spotted at a certain SE London football ground with three letters.
Which didn´t stop me from wearing them in summer.
Again, a rivierian tan helps.

Yes, you'll still chance upon certain items on Ebay that refer to 'casuals' etc.  I nearly didn't buy a pair of Nicholas Deakins because of a reference to 'the terraces' and 'clubbers', but no muscular male stopped me in the park yesterday to grunt 'Great shoes, mate...'  I expect the Gloverall and college scarf would have foxed them.

Re: Hold It Right There: The Pink Shirt

I still don't think pink works well as a polo shirt and I think it's a dreadful idea for a sweatshirt.
I do, however, favour beige over navy for a sweatshirt, so that probably marks me out as a tad eccentric.  I seem to recall Jeff Garet wearing one on a humid day at Russell Street.  But Jeff looked good in anything: effortless.
The Mark Timlin story still makes me smile.
I now have three pink shirts: two Brooks and a Duck Head.
One has to be capable of changing the old mind.
What remains of it.

Embrace your inner pinkness.

Come to think of it that sounds pretty disgusting.

Re: Hold It Right There: The Pink Shirt

I wore a pink RL short sleeve shirt this morning. I had to be able to whip my shirt off for some tests at the hospital and the RL fitted the bill. It's a made in Canada 30 year old shirt. I'm going to wear it down the pub later.

Re: Hold It Right There: The Pink Shirt

Several pink shirts owned here. My claim to fame when I was doing the mod thing in London in the mid 2000's was a pink mackintosh, worn over suits and ties, heads used to swivel with that one.
Pink socks too exist within my repertoire, although I never quite got as far as the pink trouser & Smedley combo worn by a friend of mine on a couple of occasions. It's a colour tat suits me, I like it, so why not? The only risk here in Ireland is people thinking you have notions and most of the local population have long since drawn the conclusion that I do.

Re: Hold It Right There: The Pink Shirt

My first ever Brooks Bros. purchase was a pink button-down, in about 1982, shortly after my fist trip to NYC. International mail order was not something BB undertook back in those times, so I got my friend who lives in the US to buy it for me and post it on, along with some Big Red chewing gum, which you couldn't get in the UK. In the accompanying letter he said something along the lines of "anytime you want something, let me know". I think after several hundred trips to his local post office later, he may have come to regret that offer!
As I love pink anyway I still dig it out now and then... and did you know that until Edwardian times pink was for boys, and blue for girls? Why and when it got reversed I'm sure someone can find out.

@AFS a very Irish put-down, generally aimed at anyone who is a bit full or fond of themselves or anyone who goes against the grain in any way, shape or form.

In use: did ye see yer man with his new haircut, sure he's some notions.

I've got to say I'm big on pink and that Brooks Brothers used to make the definitive pink oxford. Worn with a black knit tie and you're just a total pussy magnet, despite what your old flame said AFS. I also have a nice Mercer pink Oxford but it lacks the sherbetty kick of BB's.

I intend trying it out again.  Minus black knit tie.
