On The Subject Of Scottish Tweed...

Horace raised this topic on another thread.  I thought it worth picking up.  The entire Harris tweed business is a complete puzzle to me.  I must have seen several hundred examples during the past twenty years, of varying quality, and including some I found wholly dubious - with an interior zipper.  I didn't examine every single one but a 'vintage' seller opened up a huge box last year and invited me to rummage through them.  I recall Brooks and Banks.  Didn't buy anything.  Nothing was in my then porky size.  All darted, I'd say.
Now: is there some Far Eastern connection?  Nothing would surprise me.
I tried switching to Donegal tweed.

KingstonIan is often well informed in these matters.

Re: On The Subject Of Scottish Tweed...

Broadening this out, wool 'collegiate-style' herringbone jackets can be picked up for next to nothing.
The 'Doctor Who' chappie about ten years ago kicked off a brief fashion for Harris.
I've got two or three at the moment: obscure names but 'Tailored In The USA'.
Variable quality but not bad around the shoulders.
As good as 'Cricketeer' (for instance)?
Probably not as good as the old Brooks 'workhorse' of yesteryear.
But why are they in the UK in such large quantities?

If memory serves me well, I did once note some Chinese connection.
