Re: Smart looking John Simon’s customer on Permanent Style

Gurteen and Brooke Taverner will often feature.

One of my best mates who I regularly meet up with does work for Brooke Taverner. He shoots and designs all of their Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter brochures.

The guy who owns it, is making a killing at the moment. He's opening up shops all over the country. Everything is pretty much selling out. But it's cheaply made in China. Not my cup of tea.

Re: Smart looking John Simon’s customer on Permanent Style

BT began popping up in 'obvious' outlets, exactly like Loake and Grenson twenty-plus years ago.  I didn't see any in 'Graves', where I bought the odd bit of kit before 'lockdown'.  But the old buffer who ran it had plenty of Gurteen, Alan Paine, Peter something-or-other (Werth or Christian; uninteresting check shirts), dealer boots for the local horse-fanciers.  Also 'Merit' cotton cords, which seemed better than nothing at the time.  Made In England but the arse wore out in double quick time, quite likely because I spent a lot of time on it reading early Mary McCarthy, all the Bond novels and much of Philip Larkin during the first phase of 'lockdown'.
Cheaply made in China comes as no surprise.  Members of my family will buy anything if its cheap, wherever it's made.
I salute Cedric.  I salute anyone who cares.  He evidently does.
Up here, though, the situation is almost entirely bleak.  They can flog Tommy Hilfiger and the odd pair of halfway decent socks but not much else.
These are 'high end' shops, mark you.

I have a pair of Brook Taverner Olive Brisbane moss Cord trousers. They are really well made. I didn't realise their clothes are all made in China so I checked the strides for labels.  Nowhere does it say where they are made so I guess it is probably China.

I can distinctly remember when I first heard The Derek and Clive first album. It was lunchtime and I was in Brook Geen London with my Chelsea mate Paul listening to a tape in my car 1976. Wired that I can remember such detail but not what I had for breakfast this morning

Cook and Moore: so funny when they were on form, so embarrassing when they weren't (which was more often than not).  I still remember sitting through their abysmal version of 'The Hound Of The Baskervilles' in a run-down Manchester cinema circa 1972.  Typical 'funny men', thinking themselves funnier than the audience is likely to.  Rowan Atkinson, Cleese and co. all suffer from this same delusion.
I was still at school when 'Derek And Clive' appeared.  We wet ourselves laughing then went round repeating chunks of it endlessly, exactly like ponces continued to do with Python for the next half century.
I prefer the Algonquin style of wit.

Robbie, I'm not sure whether they are all made in China, but definitely a majority. I know for a fact non tweed sports jackets i.e. Moleskin, Corduroy etc are, because my mate showed him the JS Ivy Jackets and he said he could get them knocked up in China for next to nothing.
