Take It Or Leave It: The Shawl Cardigan

I like them but have never owned one.  Always the wrong size, colour, won't ship to the UK, whatever.  Apparently popular at the Ivy Shop.

Yes I like them, but not in that insanely baggy fit or hugely chunky version some wear them. Very practical when working from home I found last winter.  Can be crazily expensive for no real discernable reason.

Re: Take It Or Leave It: The Shawl Cardigan

I like them but haven't got one now. A few years ago I went to the Orvis shop in London to check out an olive one on sale. They didn't have it in the shop and I had gone there to try in on because sizing crucial for a shawl. I could see the shop assistant getting interested and he checked and said it was in stock. Within minutes it was suddenly sold to someone else and I suspected the guy in the shop had bought it for himself!

Yet another on my ivy I dislike list. Although in this case it's more indifference than dislike. They worked for McQueen it's true. On lesser mortals: not so much.

Whatever floats your boat though.

Whatever floats my boat is - a vintage Sabre shawl cardigan, picked up on Ebay for £12.
Sabre were mentioned on here years ago, possibly by JFM, as being a London/Richmond Ivy fancy.

I remember Sabre from the eighties.
Very expensive for what it was.
It was stocked in Rackhams in Birmingham. A high end departments store similar to Jenners in Edinburgh.
I think it was British made but had some Italian design link.Might of just been the brand imagery. So long ago now

Thanks for chipping in, R and A.  For the money, I was pleased.  I'd seen it come and go, told myself I didn't need another item of knitwear, then thought better of it.

Well, that's three additional items of knitwear this week!

I also remember the brand Sabre but I don't think I bought any jumpers from that brand. I mostly bought Paine from Squire shop, then Village Gate Shetland sweaters and then M & S pullovers. I may have bought a Slazenger golfer jumper with the logo as they were popular for a while.

Slazenger now owned by Sports Direct and the jumpers ,(even the premium brand) made in China bare no resemblance to the made in UK (Scotland?)  products of the past.

Actually the Slazenger Heritage brand in Burgundy merino wool with an 'original' logo looks ok but I think it is made in china. If it was made in UK or Portugal I might be interested.

Re: Take It Or Leave It: The Shawl Cardigan

I had a couple of Slazenger sweaters mid to late 70's (made famous by Seve) before I moved on to unbranded Pringle & Braemar, in solid colours not patterns.

I think the Slazenger brand has had the Mike Ashley treatment these days.

Didn't Connery wear one in 'Goldfinger', thus turning it into a Mod fad for about a fortnight?
I seem to remember them being made of acrylic at one point and rather nasty.
Not surprised China has got in on the act.

Yes he did, a chocolate brown coloured one.

Mine definitely were Acrylic, I was a poor teenager. Bought them with my Saturday job money.

Re: Take It Or Leave It: The Shawl Cardigan

Those jobs...  Washing cars for Fruit Gums to begin with (a 'joey' if you were lucky)...  paper rounds...  shampooing hair and sweeping up for my Motown-mad Mod Jewish mucker (RIP)...  a stint in the local pet shop...
I lacked the judgement of Runninggeez and invested in lurid socks and an even more lurid tank top.  Almost certainly acrylic.  I wish I'd saved up and bought a pair of those loafers that were so popular with the hard nuts at school.
