This might sound like nit-picking but don't some of the 'colourways' strike you as a little well, er, skin'ead?
The 'Creighton' gets the thumbs up but a 'Hunt Club' (s/s) in the USA looks just a little too 'Spirit Of '69' for my liking, Which leaves me somewhat at sea.
Does anyone know when the very first Madras shirts were being made and by whom?
Sorry: this is a serious question... From Coltrane to Joe 'awkins in less than ten years?
Then, have Ralph Lauren more or less cornered the market in recent years?
Note that I'm talking about shirts only, not jackets or shorts (or strides, sometimes worn, if Ebay Com is anything to go by, by American females: made by Halrin?).
'Made In Inja? Cor blimey, Nosher, I din't realise dat lot were onta it...'
Who, more or less recently, offer the worst?
For my money it's a toss up between Gant and Aertex. Both complete rubbish.
My Gitman 'Vintage' madras might be the best shirt of its kind I've ever owned. Made in USA, great material, collar perhaps too small for some. Madras in the 80s took a bit of a nosedive when the colours were wrong and they started putting those awful fake horn buttons on them. Jos A Bank churned these out. Early 60s American madras shirts were truly wonderful, and always worn with penny Weejuns - Greil Marcus told me so and he was there, in LA !
Lovely one on O'Connells IG page, but at $175 + postage & import duty, well it's a no from me.
Ouch, R, yes, I see what you mean.
More Hunt Club for me at around a tenner a pop.
