Tennis Chic

If the old money posh look so beloved by certain wings of American Ivy truly exists today, other than in marketing campaigns, it is surely in the annual spectacle that is Wimbledon. I confess to lapping it all up - the retrained aesthetic of olive green, white on the players, fantastic Ralph Lauren outfits on the referees (including Wayfarer sunglasses), absolutely minimal advertising, the power and beauty of the game itself. The vulgar corrupting power of the market can only be kept down by imposing such a strict visual code, but it shows just what spectacular results can be achieved. That the competition can be packaged to resemble 1954 in 2022 is a remarkable achievement. Compare to the effects of dirty money on our beloved game of football and sob.

Re: Tennis Chic

We never seem to watch it nowadays.  But I certainly used to enjoy watching those Russian girls, rubbing the ball on their arse-cheeks.

Re: Tennis Chic

When Ralph first got involved in Wimbledon the polo shirts (worn by ball boys and girls but also on general sale) were sadly Big Pony versions.

I went to a launch event for the first collection in Bond Street and what was immediately apparent was the high quality of all the items. The pocket bags on the shorts were towelling, the classic v neck sweaters were cashmere and the Umpire trousers were originally in the style of Oxford bags with lovely side adjusters and made of gaberdine.

Whilst Ralph has his detractors and occasionally dips his toe into silly territory ( camo tweed) he also manages to nail certain things really well. I think this is a case in point.

I still own several pieces although whilst the original big pony stuff I thought was just visual fun I am too self conscious now to wear it.
