Re: Ivy and Trad dedicated thread on Dressed Well

Perhaps Ivyists would like to read and perhaps join in a discussion about a possible book about John Simons. Posters will be able to quote and attach pics and clickable links.

Who was 'NJS' on 'The Wardrobe'?  Reads like the kind of lad who'll now be snorting and whinnying on DW.

Nick Storey. I'm not sure he is still alive

NJS was a barrister who wrote a book about clothing. There is a photo of him on tinternet in a great hat like the Man from DelMonte would wear.

When there were characters in The Wardrobe forum. Very dapper.

Exactly. I don't recall anything objectionable whatsoever about him. Yet all these years later AFS is insulting him. It's almost as if AFS isn't actually our resident intellectual, but more a manic poster of bitter inanities.

And anyone who points that out gets subjected to personal attacks. Fortunately personal attacks are pretty useless when the person writing them knows nothing about the person they are attempting to attack.

With regard to NJS, this is very true, unless AFS knows something we don't.  I always enjoyed Nick Storey' s posts.

There is something odd about attacks on the internet and on my experience they rarely do the attacker good.

I worked with a guy a few years ago who opened up a dedicated site to attack me and others. My response was to get his site closed down and to make him my hobby.

He is currently in his second year of a four year prison sentence in the UK.

Were you responsible for his getting nicked?

Did you go to court to see him getting sentenced?

Was he actually guilty or did you fit him up?

Re: Ivy and Trad dedicated thread on Dressed Well

^ I paid back the attack on me by making his life a misery, but I have no idea whether that pushed him towards the behaviour that got him arrested.

No. I learnt about his imprisonment via internet stories which were linked  to newspaper accouts written by others he'd presumably annoyed.

I didn't fit him up at all, and I had had no idea that he'd been involved in the behaviour that had led to his arrest.

I think it always pays to be nice, and if not try to make sure nobody will take that against you.

Re: Ivy and Trad dedicated thread on Dressed Well

Oh, come Robbie.  Gentlemen on 'Talk Ivy' have been taking the piss out of one another for fifteen or sixteen years.  They're not about to quit now.  In the old days, of course, there used to be the occasional get-together dahn The Smoke.  Drink was consumed and much back-slapping and merriment occurred.
Personally, however, I never attended these shindigs, as they were sometimes in remote places like Shoreditch.  I mean ter say, there are limits.

My mum's  'If you can't say anything nice......' was generally aimed at me.
I didn't necessarily follow her advice.

Re: Ivy and Trad dedicated thread on Dressed Well

DWs 'Ivy Club' seems rather quiet, with only that moaning bleeder Skipper much in evidence recently.  I never could work out what it is he actually wears (and where).
What are the DW lads truly interested in clotheswise?  Italian?  English bespoke?  Boyer/Flusser-wear?  Early 70s Ralph Lauren?
Sammy mentions Turkish shoes...

Sammy mentions Turkish shoes on the Shoe Thread, not in the Ivy Club.

But give the Ivy club time, AFS. As has been said before, see it as a lifeboat.

And don't forget that there are lots of other threads on DW that attract posters. It doesn't always have to be about Weejuns.  It doesn't even have to be about clothes at all. It can be interesting, for example to talk about current affairs with people who view being well-dressed as a relatively  important aspect of life.

Re: Ivy and Trad dedicated thread on Dressed Well

Sammy, I see they're still playing ping-pong with Roe V.Wade.  I studied US Political Science for three years and remember Brown and Miranda a whole lot better ('Hill Street Blues' refreshes my memory on the latter from time to time) but don't remember much about the abortion issue except being told the Founding Fathers had diddly squat to say on the subject.  Fair dinkum, I'd say, if they were too busy slaughtering the native inhabitants.  But some of your dottier posters might well request a free transfer to the 'New Statesman'.  Actually, no, it would prove too open-minded for most of them.

I'll shortly be renewing my subscription(s) to all those fringe right wing journals Pimpernel Smith is reputed to derive his information/opinions from.

On a kindlier note, I do recall him, as a 'Talk Ivy' poster, being exceptionally sound on modern jazz.

β€œ It can be interesting, for example to talk about current affairs with people who view being well-dressed as a relatively  important aspect of life.??

Although on DW it is more likely to be a polemic, rather than an invitation to talk about current affairs.

β€˜On How The Planet's Going To Shit: The Undeniability Of Climate Change.’ for example.

Re: Ivy and Trad dedicated thread on Dressed Well

Polemic is right.  But even on this forum it's often impossible to express a contrary opinion without being booed and hissed.  So it was in the beginning, when Frosty played ringmaster, peddling his bits of left-wing, middle-class, public school bullshit.  DW can't be singled out as the only place where witch-burning goes on.  Oh no.

Re: Ivy and Trad dedicated thread on Dressed Well

Just having had a look at their thread on political news I can honestly say I enjoyed the 'Joe Biden Inconvenience Store' bit whilst finding most of the comments on the UK political scene retreads of comments, remarks, opinions, buffoonery peddled over the past half century and more.  Remember John Junor: When the pigs have their snouts in the trough it's difficult from looking at their curly tails to tell a Tory pig from a socialist pig.  I suppose this was said of the era of Wilson, Heath, Maudling, the QUANGO, the unions etc. etc.
