Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

Runninggeez-Ive checked the website and they have my size in trousers but not jacket. I've asked them to notify me when my size is available. Not back in UK till 4 July so no hurry but I feel I will miss out again.

Arrow 'Wrinkle-Free' chinos.  Like Silvermans', they're made in India.  And why not indeed?  But will they live up to their name?
Finding non-poly/cotton chinos ain't always so easy.

Another Gant archive Madras, all the details flap pocket, third button etc etc etc .

The reason being not many BB Makers out there and those that are, are way too expensive.

Plus also missed out on the JS Madras as I was anticipating the Kamakura Vintage Ivy Madras which was based on the one Coletrane is seen wearing but looks bloody awful and nothing like it.

At £14 it was also a bargain.

Original Madras  Trading Company shorts.
Really nice navy check with a yellow windowpane overcheck.
Very lightweight.

Yesterday, in fact, it was that old Makers shirt.  Could it be from the 50s?  I'll be undertaking research.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

An Amazon package left in my porch rather than put through the letterbox.

It was for the Hungarian chap in nearby flats. The postie only looked at the number and not the rest of the address. They are a nice family. He runs a business offering flights and inexpensive dental treatment in his home country.

I suspect some of the Dressedwell crowd would have just thrown it away as punishment. The husband shares the same Christian name as Mr.Orban.

Posties nowadays tend to be far too busy listening to music through their earphones to concentrate on anything as basic as actually reading an address with accuracy.  The perpetual wearing of shorts also seems to have affected any mental aptitude.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

This a.m., in a downpour, roofers roofing: a long-sleeve John Smedley polo shirt.  Sea island cotton in a kind of 'air force' blue.  I would have preferred navy.  Also a pair of slightly baggy USA-made Lands End cords.  'Gold', I'd say, rather than 'mustard'.

Cox Moore knitwear: not unlike a long-sleeve polo shirt.  The wool is possibly merino.

Made In England but apparently exported to the USA alongside Paine and Pringle in the early 60s.  I'm indebted to the gentleman over on 'The Wardrobe' who drew my attention to the name.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

A lovely pair of Original Madras Trading Company shorts.
Appear to be well made.
Some Ralph swim trunks ready for my holidays. In a stunning orange and blue check.
Both items were sale purchases as Mrs Singer is on a rant about living within our means - whatever that means?

Ryder&Amies college scarf.  Solid blue, around six feet long, still in its original bag.  Contemporary.  It will go into storage until late autumn.

Sabre shawl cardigan followed (via courier) by Clansman Shetland crew-neck.  Both being carefully stored until later in the year.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

Alvey - where did you get your buys from?
Been looking for madras shorts for a long time,
Just back from 10 days in Portugal, swimwear- RL madras & b/w seersucker, and a pair of LE navy, the LE nowhere near as comfortable, so I’d be interested in another pair of RL, funny thing is they are the only RL items I have, only ever owned 3 RL shirts in 30 years, logo, no pocket, collar length are all no no’s for me, just saying!

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

Staxfan,
The OMTC shorts were from Northern Fells. I've had a couple of items from them. Prompt service and always answer any enquiries quickly
I really rate RL swimwear. Whoever the maker is, they're really good.
Funny thing is I've just got back from Florida and these swim shorts were more expensive there than here due to a 50% OFF sale on the UK Ralph site.
They're an orange and blue check and look better on than the rubbish Ralph image.
If you're looking for good swimwear also look at the Reyn Spooner EU website. The rise isn't as good as RL but the fabric they use is exceptionally comfortable. With a young-ish family I'm forever in and out of the pool on holiday so getting something that looks god but is comfy is important.

Thanks Alvey,I’ll check out all your recommendations, I wasn’t aware RS did swimwear, I’ve been encouraging a friend who’s a big Grateful Dead fan (?), to get a RS GD resort shirts ! I just walk along the beach in my RL swimmers checking the talent on the beach..... sad old man some might say , haha

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

Alvey - I checked out the Northern Fells website, some real bargains on there, shetland crews heavily discounted, I liked the look of the Vetra poplin cotton blazer in off-white, I might have been tempted if they'd had my size, but there again no rear vent is a deal breaker for me, again heavily discounted down to £105, IMO the poplin cotton  look better than the hopsack or linen versions... probably go back to the RL site for those swim shorts.... Cheers !

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

Stax- I also checked the Northern Fells site and agree some real bargains but nothing really in my size. Funnily enough I also fancied the off white Vetra jacket and also noted the expected no rear vent. Once upon a time it would have been a deal breaker for me as well but I've mellowed in my old age. I've become even more aware of where products are made however and I will pay extra for Made in 'Certain Countries'.

Not clothing today but James Haskins' biography of the great Mabel Mercer.  I'd like his book on Bricktop but it's expensive.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

Robbie/Stax,
I bought the poplin a few years ago from Dicks Edinburgh.
It's a superb travel weight garment but alas it lacks a vent.
I'm hoping that the vented Vetra jackets at JS sell well and they're encouraged to continue this line into fall.
I have been exceptionally pleased with the hopsack cotton that I purchased earlier in the year.
The Shetland Woollen Co knits they stock I think are actually Lawrence Odie. I have a navy brushed and again I can recommend - I sized down.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

A blue Brooks Brothers Makers OCBD. Definitely not vintage, I would say this century (does anyone know how to date a BB shirt) VGC, made in the USA and £12.50 inc P&P from eBay.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

Brooks shirts can be dated.  It has been done.  As my wife says, examining the various labels over the years is not unlike examining the marks beneath the pottery she once collected: sometimes slight changes over time, sometimes quite dramatic changes.
The shirt I picked up from Ebay for a couple of pounds the other week was dated by TRS to around 1967.  Paying £12.50 for a decent Makers would still make me very happy indeed.  I'm not so keen on M&M, however, even if they are made in the USA.
Two or three shirts I had from Shamrock around 2008 were made in Jamaica.  I've not come across any others since.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

Quite by co-incidence, the Brooks Brothers 'Special Order' shirt, delivered by the pretty Hermes courier (who digs Ed Sheeran, so that's a definite black mark against her).  Pale green linen (not a button-down) with very specific washing instructions (cold) but no additional information.  Not old, though, judging from the label.  Stiffeners in the collar but easily removed, unlike with some English shirts (Viyella, for instance).  Inexpensive.

I may wear this next week, if the weather is hot, with chinos and my 'Sample' Pro-Keds.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

An excellent morning.
First, a lovely book on Paris, sent to me by our adorable TRS.
Then a hand-framed Shetland from the Lake District (go figure)
Then an obscure 'Dad jumper', which is partly for when the gas bill soars and we're living on beans on toast and partly for visiting my elder daughter on her hoho-ray estate, complete with five-year old child, frisky labrador and manic Ukrainian student.
