Alvey, it's called 'Paris In Turmoil' (when was it in any other condition?), by Eric Hazan. It's partly about the destruction of the more working class areas of the city. I'd certainly recommend Richard Cobb for a photographic record, taken around areas like Belleville (parts of which, I read recently, have become 'gentrified'). I was warned to keep away from Stalingrad. Of course I went directly there and the most sinister thing that happened was, a little black guy asked me for the price of a cup of coffee.
I love Paris, too. But I've made only three visits, the last in 2012. I stayed in Montmartre during the first two visits, in the Latin Quarter on the third.
I play a little game with myself: Paris or Rome?
You and TRS could join in.
I've yet to come up with an answer.
I like the French.
Of course, those doing the gentrifying think they're doing the original inhabitants a huge favour.
I wonder, I really do.
Hawick Argyle cotton sweater. Preppie?
The Hazan book is about more than that though. Small, quirky essays reflect on aspects of Paris history and culture. I like the essay on zinc as the most Parisian of all materials. But Rome would get my vote. It's just...just....fantastico, bellissimo, spettacolo etc... And the coffee is miles better than the Paris version. And the pizza..... mamma mia....
Yes: probably Rome. Although I used to love the coffee (and food) at a modest Vietnamese place opposite Gare Du Nord.
When I met my wife, some twenty years ago, we started to regularly go away to celebrate my b'day.
Paris was always cheaper than Rome as my birthday is typically around Easter. It also helps that my wife is fluent in French and is pretty tolerant of me continually requesting she approach complete strangers to ask what it is they're drinking/eating/wearing.
Possibly the most bizarre situation was a four way conversation between myself, my wife, a French/Japanese translator and Shuya Akino of the Kyoto Jazz Massive in the early hours of the morning after he had DJ'd in a hotel we'd had dinner in.
To this day I've never visited Rome but I have had many an Italian holiday so sadly I can't contribute to the debate.
Oh, Alvey, you must go to Rome. TRS and I will arrange to take you. Leave Mrs. Singer behind for a week or two. TRS speaks Italian and knows where to get the very best coffee and pizza.
I wish my wife was fluent in French.
Her father coming from Liverpool, she struggles with basic English.
I have to agree with AFS, Rome is beautiful and is one of my favourite cities. Last time we went we stayed at the Hotel that was formerly The Rome Times building.
I also found a lovely little blues/Jazz bar a short walk away run and owned by an American/Italian.
Best area we found is near the huge railway station. Tourists are advised to steer clear because of pickpockets etc. The most obvious menace we encountered were 'entertainers' in the restaurant we wandered into on the first evening, jabbering, strumming guitars and stamping their feet while I was getting to grips with the locally-produced veal in a rich tomato sauce.
We used to visit Rome to celebrate birthdays. I loved it. Paris doesn't do it for me even though I still remember my 'schoolboy French'.
Late summer we are visiting Riga for a birthday bash. Not too keen to be honest.
I've just ordered a couple of Truss T shirts from Marrkt. The search for a good white T shirt continues.

Robbie -I'd be interested to hear what you think of the Truss T's, I bought 4 coloured T's from Gap for the beach a couple of weeks and was quite pleased with them for what I paid ,(around a tenner each), but I saw the Truss T's after I'd bought the Gap ones and thought they might be better, I liked the colours that were on offer, the Gap t's are packed away now until the next beachy holiday, my day-to-day t's for dog walking, gardening etc are Ivy regulation white, grey, navy ,hah, As an aside, after a tip off by Alvey that Uniqlo had a collaboration with Reyn Spooner, I've been pondering on buying the red & blue batik style print open collar shirts, at £24 (full price) all cotton, they seem a bargain and I'll probably regret it if they sell out before I stop dithering, however, there are only so many days a year you can wear this open collar style shirt, yesterday was one and I sported a flowery number,
Stax- I only ordered one white and one grey t shirt. If they are any good I will order more.Ill let you know what I think.
I was out-out last night in Southend and I wore a bd white linen long sleeved shirt. I have started to wear more linen again. I have some good Uniqlo t shirts but they can't be worn under shirts which is what I tend to do.
The Uniqlo t shirts I have are of the waffle type. I think they have stopped doing the short sleeved ones and only offer a long sleeved version now.
Another Shetland - in a kind of heathery mix. Stocking up for autumn and winter.
I have been told, in no uncertain terms, by Mrs. AFS, that I must curb my spending. The pale yellow CoxMoore Shetland I had my eye on has been crossed off the list.
At least until the end of the month.
RL Madras swim shorts, don't think I could carry off madras shorts, but MSS I can, 2nd pair from RL, excellent fit, length, etc, 50% discount in RL sale, but they hit you with a tenner delivery charge !
Just received Truss T shirts from Markkt
I wouldn't recommend them. The positive is that both have a good neck and are thin enough to wear under a shirt. The label says Heavy Weight but they ain't. The grey one is marketed as cotton but it has 15% rayon.
I ordered large but they fit more like a medium. They were ,£20 each and are worth about £5. Maybe I expect too much from a t shirt but these don't cut it. The search continues
Truss T shirts are made in Bangladesh. If they were made in England I could swallow the price but these were probably made in a sweatshop for a pittance
I'm calling a halt to buying for the foreseeable future.
I've taken several bags of clothing to the Breast Cancer charity shop up the valley. It doesn't appear to be shifting.
I'm a little jaded by my recent 'conspicuous consumption'.
Just received Truss T shirts from Markkt ,I wouldn't recommend them. -
That's disappointing Rob, as mentioned, I've been happy with the GAP t's , I bought 4 and the best 2 are the cheapest one,( gap organic cotton pocket t),which were £8.99 each in the never ending sale at GAP, fit was good on these 2 as well, true to size,
Stax- Ive had a few GAP t shirts in the past and they were good. The outlet shop in Lakeside used to be on my 'places to visit' when I was shopping over that way. Unfortunately they closed their retail outlets. I'm old school and like to browse, when out and about, but that is becoming increasingly futile
Robbie - I agree, but like most I'm increasingly buying on line,
Today my Uniqlo/Reyn Spooner 'batik' print open collar shirt arrived, probably only dare wear it on holidays where nobody knows me but for £24.90 (full price !), I couldn't pass it up, and it's a decent shirt, maybe wear it inside out so people can see the RS name , haha
Anyone interested in buying a Bara Harrington should look on the Market site. Green or black , all sizes at knockdown prices
Few bits and bobs arrived on my door mat recently: Reyn Spooner x Uniqlo - I went for the off-white with sail boats & palm trees. Americana rather than Ivy. Also picked up some of their t-shirts, forget the name “U by Uniqlo?? maybe, something like that. Delighted with them, decent neck that’s a it higher than some but it’s woven so that won’t fold over, not too thin and reasonably heavy but not so much you can’t pull a Jeff G and wear them under a shirt.
Decided to grit my teeth and be shafted by the import fees, so got myself a pair of Off-White Topsiders from JS. should have gone for a half-size bigger, my feet are quite wide and they pinch on top of the foot a bit, hopefully they’ll give eventually, very comfy otherwise. Been wearing them with pink shorts and blue/white seersucker shorts and shirts in blues. Wish I’d bought the navy too but what should have been a sixty euro shoe was close to 100 thanks to brexshit and various taxes etc.
Biggest extravagance lately was a pair of Allen Edmonds MacNeil in Shell colour 8. Proper, genuine gunboats. Feel a bit like Shoey when I say I can’t wait for Winter so I can give these bad boys a spin. Legs shall open and knickers shall fall once the fairer sex catch a glimpse of such magnificent shoos.
Tim - When you buy from JS do they deduct the UK VAT ?, If not they should, their prices obviously include UK VAT and as they are ' exporting' to you in the EU it should be VAT free,(so you pay EU VAT on arrival), after a lifetime in the forwarding/logistics business I know about this stuff ! Were you pleased with the RS x Uniqlo ? I have the blue batik print, haven't worn it yet, I felt it needed a wash to soften the collar, a couple of weeks ago I had a Gitman ' Zephyr' blue oxford arrive, it's a lightweight oxford ( pinpoint ?), it'll need a lot of ironing but I'm pleased with it, probably wear it tonight when my Wife & I take our neighbour out for dinner to celebrate her 90th birthday, she wanted to go for dinner not lunch !
