What, I hear you cry, that old slaphead? He's not Ivy, he's eye-talian American! Well yes and yes, but he is, I think, an admirable example of what is now a blended Euro-American soft posh wealthy look which has much of the spirit of Ivy about it. For my taste the fit is too tight, and it looks a bit forced, but the shoulders and general tailoring are soft, the colours and textures are excellent, the ankles are often tanned and bare, and the footwear is of the right stuff. And as a baldy, not quite on Stanley's level, I admire his tanned dome and excellent eyewear selections. And he can cook, and he hangs out with Clooney on Lake Garda, so what's not to like?
Yes, agree with everything you say about Tucci apart from one thing. He sometimes wears an awful trainer/deck shoe/lace up.
What I really admire about his clothing selection is it manages to be contemporary without looking like he is trying to be youthful. He exemplifies a dressing for grown ups approach without looking staid. He obviously cares about his appearance as everything looks precise - no knuckle dragging sleeve lengths or oversized collar sizes.
I also really like that he sticks to a limited colour palette. Lots of navy, white or cream. He obviously knows what works for him.
On Insta he offers a humorous take on cocktails. Never takes himself too seriously.
I enjoyed the Italy show when it was originally on CNN so much that I bought his book but unfortunately it has yet to reach the top of an ever growing bedside selection.
You can't fault the guys enthusiasm.
Oh, Clooney. I thought he said Rooney - that little scouser who my wife swears looks like a baked potato with a little bit of hair stuck on top.
Tucci´s American-Italian style is … well, not bad.
But ... i have to admit, i´m much more excited and inspired by the kind of Italian-American (Ivy-related) style that some, mostly elderly (northern) Italian gentiluomini sport in such a wonderful way. And this goes like that: Soft button-down shirts (not necessarily oxford cloth) in lighter blue, khaki slacks (not the US-Army type of course, more „cottons“, flat fronted, maybe what Incotex offered some 20 years ago), topped off with some cashmere or lambswool round-neck sweater in navy or ink-blue or bottle green. Slung elegantly over the shoulders most of the time. The fit is never too tight but just right. Loafers are a must. Alden LHS in suede, or C&J Boston, Harvard. Or driving-shoes. Suede leather, choc brown, blue, sometimes in more adventurous colours like lighter green or even terracotta. No socks! A tan is obligatory.
I remember a Breton around a dozen years ago. Running a cookware shop near St.Malo.
He was wearing a Ralph Lauren shirt, untucked.
Tanned - he looked wonderful. So unlike we pasty Brits.
I have always admired the way most Italian cities, I have visited over the years, appear to have plenty of specialist independent menswear stores.
Last time I was in Naples the number of shirt shops was amazing.
The only bad thing, that became obvious over time, there didn't seem to be much variation in what they wore.
In Milan one Winter for example I saw a lot of older guys wearing Tods chucka boots, grey flannels and A1 style suede jackets. Yes, they look a million miles sharper than most British men of their age but once you've seen the exact same look fifty times it gets a bit predictable.
Zegna, whilst expensive, have had some some lovely brushed flannel button downs over the years.
Got back last Friday from 10 days in Portugal, packed for wall-to-wall sunshine, just 1 pair of trousers,1 l/s shirt & 1 sweater, got badly caught on in the first few days with a chilly wind,(we've been to Portugal plenty of times late June), we're hopefully going back next year at the end of May with Kids & Grandkids, my Wife agreed I need to up my game in lightweight sweaters, apart from Uniqlo lightweight merino any suggestions ? Maybe something from the 'mature' Italian mans staples ?
Tucci´s American-Italian style is … well, not bad.
But ...
What a great post WIL.
Wish WIL would post more often. He's always worth reading.
Yes, a very knowledgeable chap. Put me straight on the make of Car Shoe Gianni Agnelli wore.
I would love to try and carry off that look described by WIL, but I don't think it'd work here in the suburbs of Surrey.
I love that look of the mature Northern Italian gent. It is all about climate, location and culture, however. Not easily transferrable.
Here in the Southend area I've noticed that the more 'fashion conscious' girls and boys are wearing a lot of black this summer. And white 'trainer' footwear. Something I may have done in the 1990s. Nothing to do with ivy of course.
This is the weather to go 'Full Tucci' - shades, linen shirt, white Levis, no socks, Alden loafers. And you know what? As I'm nibbling my Magnum in the shade later this afternoon I must just open a second button on my shirt. Sexy Ivy.
I went Semi- Tucci Friday night. White linen BD long sleeved shirt, mustard 5 pocket Lee, yellow socks, brown boat shoes, white boxers (always a tricky colour). Maroon weaved made in Italy belt. I left my green round neck lambswool jumper at home because it didn't look right (think boy scout) and I thought I might lose it, when out on the razzle.
Sunday I wore a pale blue linen jaeger plain collared shirt. I haven't gone non BD for a long time but it was the linen look I was going for.
'nibbling my Magnum in the shade'
Pure filth.
I went, in the heat of Sunday afternoon, in Madras, Levis and Dexter penny loafers.
Sockless - was cut slightly on my right foot. But the temptation to leave off the socks was too great.
Nibbling my Magnum, in sunshine or shade, is out. I had to make do with a large prawn salad, black cherries and Pellegrino cut with lime juice.
If I could nibble my very own 'Magnum' my what a happy chap I would be.
According to the wonderful world of Internet porn, our streets and squares are crawling with ladies whose only pleasure in life is nibbling a chaps Magnum.
This, of course, is a lie.
'But you'd do it if you loved me... You said you would... Look at my Magnum, slowly melting under the hot sun... Pretty please...'
'Oh, put it away...'
My very humble experience tells me that there is indeed a certain kind of ladies who do feel attracted by men wearing white jeans. But i´m still not sure if this is enough for a bit of Magnum nibbling?
Agree about the appeal of Magnum nibbling. A male fantasy. What sort of woman would want to do that? As Larry David speculated - a lady has to be profoundly in love with a man to overcome the ugliness of the male organ. I fear that's almost certainly only the perspective of the hyper straight conventional male.
The average human body, male or female, is often best not viewed in broad daylight. A woman is often more profoundly alluring when clothed in certain, highly specific ways, leaving something - much - to the imagination.
Frosty once discussed the 'Readers Wives' pages of porno mags circa 1970. The spotty botty was often in gruesome, close-up evidence.
I once stole a kiss from Vanessa Redgrave. Now there was a woman for you.
Vanessa! I assume you haven't washed or brushed your teeth since. I saw her a few years ago in Mayfair. Alluring, massively alluring... I bet still still looks great in the nak, in broad daylight. Blow Up! We know she likes white Levis and David Hemming's Magnum.
