Proper Khaki shorts

In my Ivy heyday, during the 1980s, when America still made wonderful traditional men's clothing, I owned a few pairs of proper, solid, full-cut, high-waisted, just above the knee, all cotton, khaki shorts, two plain fronted, one with pleats (appealing in shorts I believe). I now cannot find anything like them. The cut is wrong, the rise too low, the material too flimsy, the waistband non-existent. Today, in proper heat, I am poncing around in horrible H&M shorts and I cannot look at myself in the mirror. Please send me any suggestions for the real deal. They must be out there somewhere. I expect someone will say Ralph, but in my experience his are wrong. Back in the day they were made by frumpy companies like Duckhead and Halrin, but no longer. And I do not want to spend silly money importing from the States.

TRS, PRL are the closet I've come to anything remotely decent in recent years, closely followed by Bill's Khakis.  PRL have pleats yet are not too horrifying.
What are horrifying are my pale, English, slightly hairy legs.
My PRL were bought off Ebay and are USA-made.  No silly little pony, just a wee tag above the right hand back pocket.

Re: Proper Khaki shorts

Madras shorts have been getting a decent write-up on 'Talk Ivy' just lately.  But my favourite, about a dozen or more years ago, were seersucker.

Side pockets; coin pocket at waist
Welted back pockets, one with button fastening

Re: Proper Khaki shorts

There are some interesting offerings from our Japanese friends. But for silly money ...
My favorite Bermuda shorts is one by Ralph, about 25 years old, thanks god still fitting me more or less, flat fronted, very very washed out and frayed Nantucket Reds, 100% proper cottone, no pony!
Thinking about cutting off some cottons and make "my own" shorts.

Re: Proper Khaki shorts

When I was kid a neighbour who had been in the Desert Rats used to wear his army shorts very occasionally. That was in the days when grown ups did not wear shorts unless they were scout leaders or ramblers. They were not particularly flattering shorts but at least they were authentic.

And even the scout leaders and ramblers were figures of fun.  Just read Richmal Crompton's still wonderful 'William' stories.
I well remember those who were in charge of us circa 1967.  Scout leaders, that is.
Old gentlemen wearing shorts - with knobbly knees - and thermal vests, out walking the dog, were a dreaded sight to me during the winter.
Not to mention posties.

Re: Proper Khaki shorts

For a different breed of classic American shorts, Birdwell Beach Britches and Kanvas by Katin both offer versions of corduroy surf shorts that were ubiquitous in the later 1970’s and 1980’s, and a few other things that would have fit into the “surf ivy??  thread on here years back. Much of the Birdwell stuff is still USA made and consequently more expensive. Both appear to be vanity sized, one reviewer says his waist is 35 and he takes a 32.

Some of the Thai offerings are stunning, https://shop.line.me/@516igrbk well worth a look, they have shorts that to me smack of Colonialism and the Empire, perfect!

As you see, Tim even has 'notions' when it comes to shorts.

Re: Proper Khaki shorts

You might want to try searching Army and Navy type shorts if pleats are acceptable. Most have cargo pockets though and I guess that might not be to your liking. I did come across some Italian army ex surplus shorts that might be ok.
I've also been looking for shorts. I have a pair of high waisted Hugo Boss shorts in khaki that were cut downs from trousers bought in the 90s. They have pleats which I didn't like when they were trousers but, as you say 2RS are ok for shorts.

Re: Proper Khaki shorts

I'm thinking of going LLBean.
The Double L classics are supposed to sit on the waist. The darker colour looks like an old military style khaki.
There is also a discount off when you sign up.

I don't think you can ever say Ralph without actually seeing the item in the flesh. The specs change so frequently that what is great one season is buggered about with the next.
Take for example their classic Seersucker shorts. Once 100% cotton, next season a cotton stretch and in May I tried on a pair that the leg length was shortened but flared.

Chums,

Not within the ol’ Curric perhaps, but the Patagonia stand up shorts in khaki were always a favorite.  Esp for beach, hiking, almost any sport, puttering about the old homestead, climbing or cutting or trimming trees etc.

Re: Proper Khaki shorts

I've just bought a couple of pairs of shorts. One pair khaki, no pleats, two inside back pockets, side pockets, string cord waistband, just above the knee. The other pair a light green seersucker, just above the knee. one patch pocket to rear. No logos or writing made by Folk, a brand I quite like but they don't say where they are made so probably China.

Re: Proper Khaki shorts

TRS: Uniqlo chino shorts have a lot right (good rise, flat front, good deep pockets, lots of colours) BUT they have a 10" inseam so need taking up.
