Years ago Clark Gable defined style with maybe Cary Grant and Fred Astaire competing. Gable died in I think 1962. I put up this post before in some forgotten website.
There is a standard Bio, published in maybe 1970. 500 pages. i think there was an addendum, there was certainly a published letter from a VP at the old Abercrombie and Fitch. The New York Times Sunday book section used to have a classified ad section where you would regularly posts asking for leters ot info about someone that the advertiser hoped to write about. this letter was an obvious reply.
The author wrote about working for A&F in the late 1930s as a slesman in the late 1930s. One day he went to work and found a very hung over man he recognized as Clark Gable sitting downn and holding his head in the basement fishing department. He asked: Can I help you? Gable muttered about getting into something he shouldn't have. Eventually the salesman asked:
Can I get you coffee?
Gable raised his head and said: Yes. Black please.
The kid came back with some coffee and Gable came a little bit to life. Eventually he said: You're a nice fellow! Do you wanto come to lunch?
The kid of course said yes. He later in the day wondered if it were some homosexual pickup, but showed up at the 21 Club and was reassured when Gable made comments about the anatomy of every female customer in the restaurant.
Every year, at least twice a year, Clark Gable would come to New York City and give the kid a call, asking him to go to lunch or dinner, untill the day Gable died. The man always thought the reason Gable stayed in touch was because the kid who becam an older man, never asked Gable anything about his private life. Gable would always inquire about the man's family, his carreer, everything. But the A&F man would never ask about anything of Gable's family. He thought that it was important to the great star to know some people who shared his ow humble origins. Someone who had a 'real' life. someone who had no connection to the Star factory of MGM.
Gable dressed as well as of the great stars. I write only to keep the memory alive.
when I was growing up the stylish stars were legion. Now there literally are none. But Gable may have been the brightest and most stylish star of them all.
Not interested in much that is alive. truth to tell....... no. But would be happy to read your tom cruise post.
