Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

Following on from Spendthrifts bargain Gloverall find. I was in TKMaxx the other day just passing time until my bus arrived when I spotted a Gloverall duffle coat for £79. It was made in England, dark grey and it seemed better than the usual coats. Very heavy but XL size. Not for me, but the quality was excellent.

Gloverall is wonderful and I think overlooked.

I’m really pleased with mine. Been digging around the internet trying to date it and although there’s barely any picture or mention of a shawl collar style it definitely looks to be 50’s/60’s. Absolutely mint condition too.
Just hope it gets cold enough to wear it!

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

I did my morning walk along the estuary and ended up, yet again, in TKMaxx. The Gloverall duffle was still there. I noticed that although it was placed in the XL section it was actually a 42 (52 continental). I make that a L. So I decided to try it on. I like a traditional, slightly oversized, fit so that I can wear a jacket under. I was wearing a baracuta Harrington (not normally the type of jacket I would wear under a duffle) but anyway I tried it on. Just slightly too big. A bargain at £79 for a £299 coat! I didn't buy it but it's still playing on my mind. Ha

@Robbie - Have you thought about buying it and flipping it on eBay ?

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

I haven't thought of flipping it. I have looked on eBay and was surprised at how high are the prices being asked for second hand Duffles.
I might go back tomorrow and buy the coat. I notice that many of the shoppers for heavy duty winter coats are Eastern Europeans and they probably don't rate a Gloverall

Not posted for ages but wanted to share a couple of bargains from the 'Bay. A pair of Made in the USA Weejuns for £5.99, and an Alan Paine Shetland for £10. The good stuff is still out there, just needs a bit of patience.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

Picked up a pair of made in USA Brown levis cords for about £20. Good higher rise, but going to get them tapered to get more of a 60s look. Slighter fuller cords work well with a cuff, but without (and these are cut short for me), they can look a bit too stuffy within having a trimmer cut. So planning to copy the fit of my sta-prest cord remakes and hope for the best!

Sounds like two great finds and for next to nothing.

Good, made in the USA Weejuns are getting harder to get hold of.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

I ordered yesterday 2 items from Lands End,
a gilet for wearing under a coat for winter dog walking,(I've never owned a gilet), full price £85, they're nearly always 40% off, but I got it for £35,
Grey Waffle sweatshirt, ( with the important 'V' ), 50% off so £25, this'll be for loafing around at home, to/from gym, dog walking, maybe under my Pendleton,
however if I'm not happy with either item it'll be winging it's way back to them,

As an aside - Today on Maarkt they have some NWT's Hartford 3 button ( maybe 3/2),wool jackets , unlined, dartless ( I think), single vent, most size 50, realistic prices, if I was in the market ( no pun intended) for a jacket I'd been in for one of these,

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

Stax,

The Hartford jackets look a bit short given the length of the sleeves in the picture.

Shame as the fabric - albeit a mix – looked good

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

Alvey - I looked again and you're right re sleeves/jacket length, you're obviously more observant than me ! Yesterday I think there were 4 or 5 of them that came onto the site, just 1 left today, it seems the good stuff that comes onto that site goes very quickly, especially NWT items, a pre-owned Keydge cotton jacket came onto the site a few months ago, while I dithered it had gone in a day ( or less), I'll need to be sharper if any more come on,

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

Took a punt on one of the Hartford jackets thanks to your tip Staxfan.  The sleeve to body length does look weird in the picture but the measurements sound OK for me and the hounstooth pattern appealed.  They are returnable so figured worth a shot. Will report back.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

Latest TKMaxx bargain (which I didn't buy). A Baracuta 'made in Italy' slack jacket (label description ). Houndstooth check in red white black. 4 buttons.100%wool. Size 42 so a bit big for me. £85 reduced from £350? I took a photo of the label details but can't find a jacket like it on Baracuta sites. One off sample maybe.
The Gloverall duffle coat still on the rail unloved.
Pity we can't post photos.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

Missed out on 2 shirts on eBay today, was out on a run when they finished, so forgot all about them.

One was a Kamakura Vintage Ivy in Black Watch tartan, 1 bid £30, the other a JS Popover flannel also in Black Watch, 3 bids, £37. Oh well always another day.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

The Lands End parcel arrived last Friday, left behind a plant pot at the front of the house, ( no problem), took it inside and nearly passed out with the smell of diesel fumes which must have come from the delivery van, I did try both the gilet and waffle before I returned the parcel, I sized down on the waffle sweat (L to M), replacement items arrived today, very pleased with the waffle sweat especially for £25, gilet will work well for what it was bought for, winter dog walking, Also a Gitman pink oxford from End Clothing with the 30% discount, managed to sneak it in before the Mrs saw it, ( 'do you need another shirt' ?), I'll casually put it in the wash in a week or so hoping she doesn't notice ! In my defence there was a gap in my shirt collection for a pink shirt, and as a fan of Gitmans I need to get what I need before the prices get even higher with the dollar pound exchange rate , and they're less available in the UK, only a few places to get the Gits compared with ( say) 5-6 years ago, with the amount of them on Maarkt I'm guessing they're out of favour with the fashion forward crew, I think that's my spending done for a while, nothing I really need, but I'm looking at shawl collar cardigans, only looking of course !

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

I snapped up one of the Japanese Maple dyed Kamukura shirts that were being touted on Instagram. I doubt Mr Marsh has much to do with their design process these days but his name is still in the collar. From Japan to Ireland in 4 days, over a weekend, very impressed with that. Currently waiting on a John Simons flannel pop-over that I think someone here pointed out on ebay. False economy sadly, by the time I've paid through the nose for shipping and customs, it's only marginally cheaper than a new JS would have cost me in the shop.

Trying & failing to rein the spending in too at the moment, London in February is not so very far away. I'm aware however that this coming (Black) Friday may bring a bargain or two, so my Visa card & I are half-way ready to pounce.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

Hartford  update:  Its 3-roll-2, no shoulder padding, unlined, feels like the one Keydge I've had my hands on.  Great in many ways BUT the arms are indeed really long relative to the body.  Debating whether to keep it as quite a faff (and expensive in London) to get sleeves shortened.

69% Wool, 26% Nylon, 5% Other - another reason I'm debating keeping it.  Feels quite nice to the hand I must admit

The mysterious 'other'! Presumably it looks like a solid wool kind of material. Would be intrigued to see how it looks. Are they available online?
