I put a Topy on my soul but it doesn't seem to be keeping the bad stuff out.
Don't need topy's as my shoes already have rubber souls.

Depends on the shoe.
I have nothing against it on cordovan shoes, for instance.
A good repairer explained to me that it's vital to sand the topy down before applying to the sole. Too many cobblers are lazy and skip this vital task, so the topy often lifts. l've sacked too many shoo repairers before: now i'm very tough how l want things done (when l get shoo repairs, i'm usually very arrogant....l look for weakness in a cobbler so l can crush him like a bug if he faulters. Getting shoos fixed involved many extreme emmotions these days: i've had too many idiots screw it up...of course i'm gonna be emmotional and a hard arse).
The shoo repair industry is just like the Taxi industry: it's full of rogues that need arrogant tongues to crush them.

It always struck me a bit pointless to buy a leather-soled shoe and then apply a thin piece of rubber on it.
I don't like them since the soles won't give off that imperious sound whilst walking.

I had my Chelseas 'resoled' at the weekend, but with a 3/4 leather sole affixed instead of rubber/plastic. Along with a rubber Vibram heel, the boots are better (sturdier and better looking) than new.
Just say no to Topys. If the soles wear out, that's what the local cobbler is for. I think a recrafting is a waste if all that's needed is a new sole or heel.
People say Im crazy
I got topys on the soles of my shoes
Well thats one way to lose
These walking blues
