The Northeast, and the Northeast style

Oddly the country has left the northeast. GWB was probably the last NE President. But he had Texas roots. He was a European oriented statesman, which long ago was the true test. Carter, Clinton, GHWB. not much oriented to the New England world. I wonder about Reagan. Where did his advisors go to school? Maybe somebody knows.
Most years the NE loses population. Or at least it doesn't gain. But it does remain the Waspy trad world. though every year it may be have a lesser claim on the popular culture. The schools are still here. The brightest graduates these days go to Wall Street and many don't care. Public service seems a lesser goal.
My point is that the NE hold on the country is probably gone forever. But what comes out of the Midwest and Texas and the Mountain states may be pretty ugly. In style and in policy America may be in decline in more ways that it can imagine.

Re: The Northeast, and the Northeast style

There was a Northeast world that was Euro centric. It was Dean Acheson's world, FDR's (Atlantic First), Probably IKE's, JFK claimed that he wanted an opening to China in the 2nd term. He knew Europe, he knew a little bit about Asia.
The Pacific by reputation was always a Republican Ocean. Henry Luce, China borne, used to claim this was our obsession. It was Nixon who reoriented us towards the East. We have never turned back. Now China and Japan buy our debt. China manufactures our consumer products. And more and more our clothes (this is just a 10 year old phenomenon) In 30 years their economy will be larger than ours. It was larger 200 years ago, none of this should surprise.
The future is the Pacific and the West Coast. Not the Northeast and not the South. The future in fashion is California style.

I look at Hollywood. The virtual abandonment of the tie. I read with fervor every claim about the revival of the suit. None of them have proven true. I would look at the left coast for the direction of the country. Everyone is moving there.

and believe me, it isn't my financial anaylsis. this comes straight from Goldman Sacks and innumerable other of the best financial minds in the country. It hasn't sunk into mid america investing. But the best financial minds know where this is going, and they have known it for over a decade.
