HERE COMES SUMMER...

So what's on everyone's Summer wish list.

More to choose from than ever.

Kamakura has moved up a notch with Ivy trousers and jackets.

John Simons excels with madras shirts, FOB chinos and Bedfords, and some nice AP knitwear.

Cordings is always worth a look. They've got some good trousers and have ventured into button downs.

Lands End has a few items that will interest many on here.

On the other side of the pond J Press looks like it will have some great madras and seersucker items and their Pennant label has more contemporary fits.

And for the Ivy millionaire you can now buy a Ralph seersucker suit for a little over £3k.

Re: HERE COMES SUMMER...

The Weejun has reported favourably on Kamakura jackets and I really like the look of their patch madras one. Quite how much wear it would get is another matter, I already have a ton of summer jackets to work into the rotation.

For many years I have been stuck in a blue indigo denim rut and it’s time to break out. So another, perhaps more practical, projected acquisition is a pair of faded blue vintage 501s or similar, Made in the USA of course. Just need the right pair to come up. To be worn with white bucks, madras shirts or bright coloured Lacoste polos and a Brooks tropical blazer.

My present obsession with French Ivy has led to a renaissance in black shoe wearing. The other day, following a visit to JS, I spotted a pair of black JM Weston loafers in the window of Trunk in Chiltern Street. In I went, unable to resist the rare opportunity (in London) of handling such mythical and rare beasts. They were exquisite, but I was deterred by the knowledge that I already have two great pairs of black loafers and not least by the fearsome £770 price tag. I may go for a more affordable pair of black suede desert boots instead.

Re: HERE COMES SUMMER...

A few years back I was in Orlando and received a wine bar recommendation. Off the Singer clan went in search of USA chard.

The wine bar was a few doors down from an old, uninspiring menswear store. They specialised in chinos and had about six different brands on offer.

The store owner introduced himself and explained the different manufacturing techniques and subsequent pricing. He recommended the German brand Hertl and a lovely stone colour that has become my benchmark for cotton trousers. It's not quite white, but not cream or grey tinged either. Sadly this manufacturer stopped making the Original Khaki brand.

Since then I regularly search for similar trousers. This season Jack Donnelly poplin get my vote.

Re: HERE COMES SUMMER...

Mrs Unseen always stocks up for me in reverse, so bought me lots of non suede Clarks desert boots in the winter sale. She is sat doing the same in heavy flecked crew neck jumpers for me right now unprompted.

I had intended to get the Grenfell harrington but that's done, so I think just some polo top ups maybe this year.

Re: HERE COMES SUMMER...

Since the thick blue stripe Kamakura is no longer available, Lands End one is a substitute. It might be a bit short in the body, but it's only £30 in the perpetual sale, down from yesterday's sale price.

Re: HERE COMES SUMMER...

I have that shirt, it is good for the money. It was only in traditional fit before but now in tailored (which is a UK standard fit) so ordered one of that and the dark blue check. I wear them on holidays, nice as a touch of dress up at dinner and a walk afterwards.

Re: HERE COMES SUMMER...

Strangely the long sleeve supima polos from Lands End are now only available in traditional fit. I loved the tailored ones in decent colours, very classy items indeed.

Worried that the shirts may not tuck in properly, as I don't wear shirts untucked,  but at the price I will take that risk

Re: HERE COMES SUMMER...

I guess it depends on how tall you are with the shirts, they definitely tuck in for me - but I am not tall

Re: HERE COMES SUMMER...

Kingston1an - Lands End are ‘risk free’, last year I returned to them 3 tee shirts, 1 pair of shorts,1 pair of swimwear, all items bar 1 tee had been worn albeit only slightly and I got a full refund on the lot very quickly, they were mostly bought in lockdown so returned at least 1-2 years after purchasing them,

Re: HERE COMES SUMMER...

Thanks Stax it's good that  know. I am that lazy that returning stuff does not appeal unless it is made really easy. ( Internet modems in box the new one arrived in etc.)

Also need to start getting rid off stuff I don't wear anymore. Like poor old Russell Street RIP, who seemed to have boxes of stuff.

Re: HERE COMES SUMMER...

For anyone that's interested there are some big savings ( up to 50%) on End Clothings mid season sale, I had a quick look at their Polo items and there are plenty of polos, t's, shorts / swimwear, shirts in a wide range of sizes plenty in M & L which I guess is the average size for most of us here,

Re: HERE COMES SUMMER...

Stax,

Indeed. My shirt is now £5 cheaper. £25 instead of £30.

Re: HERE COMES SUMMER...

Shirt is fine. Tucks in OK just looked short in photos online. £5 more expensive today.

Lands End pricing changes swiftly.

Pleased with the shirt though.

Glad the shirt is good. You're right on the pricing! My two (wide stripe and navy checked) arrived yesterday.

Re: HERE COMES SUMMER...

At the other end of the price range I had an email from Gant this morning promoting their ' Mulberry Street Collection , some ' Made in USA' OCBD's,  no logos , decent looking collar roll, -  price range £250 - £310, - eye watering !

Re: HERE COMES SUMMER...

At that level bespoke from Jakes feels a better option.  I see there's a Jakes on ebay suprisingly.

Re: HERE COMES SUMMER...

I had a look at the Gant collection and for £250 I would expect better than a shirt that comes in S,M,L and XL.
As AUS says a Jake shirt would be a better option.
There is also a Jake popover shirt on Marrkt at half price but that is XL which with the generous cut of a Jake shirt would be like a tent on me.

Hold your nerve and those Gant's will be down below £100 in 2-3 months !
BTW : Had an email from Maarkt, there are a load of NWT/ deadstock Gloverall duffel coats available, not duffel coat weather but there's always next winter !

Re: HERE COMES SUMMER...

Stax- if they come down to £100 I would be interested. I reckon they will be well made. Might even be interested in a duffel coat at the right price.

Re: HERE COMES SUMMER...

On my Easter travels I have picked up a few things I couldn't source in the UK.

First off was some Press madras shorts and batik swim shorts. Must admit never had swim shorts with a zip fly!

I was interested to see what the DuckHead big label khaki reissue was like. The addition of 2% stretch is good. Supposedly based on a 1978 cut. I remember a similar trouser being worn by JG at Russel Street.

I also had a rummage at a Brooks outlet and picked up an old Madison fit uni stripe OCBD for £30.

I was tempted by all white Sperry deck shoes but given the lacklustre exchange rate couldn't

Is shorts still a thing to wear at 36?

Re: HERE COMES SUMMER...

Yes sure, I'm still wearing them in my 50s.... but I try to avoid them being too short or tight as I age.

Separately, I bought down my warm weather clothing and put up the colder yesterday - so no looking back to thicker tweeds and 80/20 shirts now for a few months

Re: HERE COMES SUMMER...

Danny - 36? … How can this be possible haha!

They are 100% a casual item and just look wrong when you see men on clothing websites wearing them with tailored jackets, or with a shirt and tie.

Also, whether shorts look okay depends on what the wearer is doing and where they are. I was in a fairly smart pub on Sunday having lunch and there was a guy on the next table in shorts, I instantly assessed him as a prick.

As Unseen said, shorts shouldn’t be too short on older guys. Just above the knee is fine, not too baggy, not too narrow.

Re: HERE COMES SUMMER...

I'm 57 and wear shorts.

In Florida during the day you just can't wear long trousers.

As with all things getting the fit right is critical. I have mine tailored to sit just above the knee. Any longer and I look like a character from IT AIN'T HALF HOT MOM.

Also I only pair shorts with polo shirts and t-shirts. Forget the Ralph look with ties, sports jackets and shorts.
