A NAME FROM THE PAST: Pendleton Seaside Shirts

Does anyone recall these?

I remember Pendleton board shirts in J.Simons. No doubt they also sold the jackets.

Not long after Chiltern Street opened I noticed a load of lovely madras style short sleeve, button down shirts being unpacked. Great collar roll, locker loop and interesting colour combinations.

To make matters confusing, over the years, some of the shirts were labelled Surf Pendleton and had a smaller Seaside Shirt collar label in the Pendleton Font. They also did a collaboration with Reyn Spooner.

Being weak-willed I couldn't resist. Over a four year period I bought a shirt each Summer. Quality wise they were superb. Staying bright after numerous washes. Slightly narrower on the waist than I would of preferred though

This was before the JSA madras shirts were launched.

Sadly, Pendleton no longer make these wonderful shirts. in truth nothing on their site appeals to me now.

I’ve got one, a lovely subdued and very wearable heavyweight madras pattern. My only reservation is that it has a contrast lined collar. But you can’t really see it in wear and the collar roll is so good that I forgive it. The name ‘Seaside Shirt’ is captivating like the old Gant shirts with names like ‘Rough Weather’.
