I know many on here enjoy Jazz and historically this film has been mentioned on here.
On the week it celebrates its 25th Anniversary Jazz Fm have produced an hour long documentary celebrating the soundtrack.
Well worth a listen as it explains how music played a pivotal part in shaping the characters and the narrative.
I found an online link to the show at their site:

I'm listening now, it's a good show. Thanks for mentioning it.

A good listen thanks Unseen.
I must watch the movie film again, my recollection of it is blurred by having watched the TV series more recently. Both were excellent, possibly the TV series told the story of the book a bit better as it was longer.
I don’t recall any specific jazz references in the book, but it is some time since I read it.
It was painting in the book apparently but it was felt music worked better in a film. It is explained in the programme.
