Re: Jake's Shirts

I can only see a green shirt and the red chambray. Both listed as L but with different sizes, as you say, Jdemy. I reckon these are sample shirts that were made up by Jake. I was shown a few samples of shirts and jackets when I visited his workshop. I ordered shirts from him according to neck size and sleeve length as per his web site. My shirts fit me really well so I was able to check dimensions before deciding that the Maarkt shirts were definitely too big for me. I reckon you can trust the sizes given because I've a hunch it is Jake selling them.

Re: Jake's Shirts

Got an email yesterday to say Jake's has moved to 58 Chiltern Street. Hopefully he will start producing some more shirts that appear to be out of stock on his web site.

Jake shirts now using Viyella Fabrics. A bit late for Christmas but should be interesting to see what he produces.

Re: Jake's Shirts

My age old BD Baggies blue chambray shirt was looking a bit past its best and it was time to order a replacement from Jake. Yesterday I collected this and was again very pleased with the standard of his work. He is about to move workshop again, from the windowless basement where he is in Chiltern St to a fourth floor workshop in Archer St, Soho.

I still see his shirts as representing excellent value compared to the obvious alternatives and as my staple shirts come up for replacement he will be ‘my go to’. Mind you I’ve still got a couple of Brooks Makers blue button downs in their packets!

Re: Jake's Shirts

Blimey, Jake moving again. I missed out on his Viyella shirts , sadly. He seems to have a lot of out of stock shirts these days.
I also see his shirts as excellent value because of the quality of workmanship and the authenticity of the products.

These look great.

Next time I'm over there (who knows when), I'll have to check them out,

I once had Harvie & Hudson try to make my some US style button-downs.  Fabrics were beautiful (DJ Anderson?) but they couldn't quite nail it.  But hell, this is about 35-40 years ago.

Re: Jake's Shirts

I'm a big fan of Jake shirts but I need a green one which now appears out of production. And I would have liked a Viyella one. Next time I need to be quicker off the mark

Re: Jake's Shirts

FlatSixC-Yes, I'm aware of the Gloverall site selling the green Jake shirts.Im not so keen on the shirt pocket, with button , on the shirt. I like a shirt pocket but not with the flap.Recently Jake was doing a double shirt pocket, which is too much for me. The Gloverall shirts by Jake are a bit cheeper than his own site though.

In Finland they celebrate Christmas eve and last night I wore a Gant  Yale co-op shirt that I found in my Finnish wardrobe. Not as good as Jake's shirts but not bad. I'm kind of shocked by the number of shirts I own but I don't suppose it will stop me buying more.

Re: Jake's Shirts

Some of you may have seen an email from Jakes this morning... for those that didn't he's selling off some RTW OCBD's , don't think there are a full range of sizes but @ 2020 prices - £145 - in 2025 that's a great price IMO !

Re: Jake's Shirts

Yes I got the email from Jake. As you say Stax the price is great for a Jake's shirt but one problem I have with them is the size of the pocket  It looks massive in the photos. I've checked my own Jake's shirts and I think it is smaller on mine (no flap). I could be wrong though, but I won't be buying any

Re: Jake's Shirts

I've always wanted to give Jakes a go.

What's put me off is the position of the second button on the placket.

I feel, just like my Mercer shirts, that although historically correct it's too low and you end up with the collar collapsing when worn unbuttoned/without a tie.

I appreciate that this sound pedantic but the devil is the detail.

Re: Jake's Shirts

AS- The second button position suits me on a Jake shirt. I find the collars do stand up unbuttoned, without a tie, which is how I always wear them. I usually have a white t shirt under, which I like to show. My only disappointment was a chambray shirt, that I was expecting to be a favourite shirt, but the collar doesn't look right (and ironing it is a bugger)

Re: Jake's Shirts

Alvey - the devil is indeed in the detail.

Jake’s shirts are reflective of Brooks Makers shirts from their golden age, in that they have a six button placket, hence the longer spacing between the collar and top buttons. Sometime in the 90s (?) Brooks switched to a seven button placket.

I like a six button placket, it doesn’t make any difference if the collar is fastened but, when worn open neck it has a different old school look. As Robbie says, it looks better with a T shirt underneath for a Richie Cunningham look.

Re: Jake's Shirts

Yes, I've always liked the Richie Cunningham look. He had some great shirts. I usually have a silver necklace on as well. Don't think that is ivy but over the years most of my mates had a bit of jewelry on, as well

Re: Jake's Shirts

FSC,

At some point I could be tempted.

I just wish I could find one brand that offered me everything.

Kama Vintage Ivy. You have the Marsh connection, regular drops of different fabrics, superb pricing, the Ivy correct details we all love but they're not made for my frame.

Mercer. Great collar roll - wearing one as we speak. Good choice of large checks. Expensive and position of second button issues even with a 7 button placket.

Brooks Madison fit - great roll. Hard to get hold of as Euro site doesn't carry the ocbd

Press - Love their sports shirts, good price but taxes and shipping are silly

JS - Always interesting fabrics and the fit is good. Happy to pay their prices but I just wish the collar size was slightly smaller on their own label shirts

Re: Jake's Shirts

Three points:-

1) For me, the T shirt showing is underwear and, as a Brit, it's not for me.

2) Six button plaquet is important if the shirt gapes above the waist. Kamakura I'm thinking of you.

3) Ben Sherman poly cotton had some absolutely fantastic blue shirts with stripes combinations. Far better than anything around at the time. I was never down on poly cotton either (advertised as permanent press).

Re: Jake's Shirts

^ That's another issue I find with Kama. The 6 button stance means they come untucked just above the waistline.

I have a VI denim shirt that I've had my local tailor add another button to that sits below the waistline. Although visually it doesn't match as you don't see it I don't mind. At the same time they moved the cuff buttons to tighten up the sleeves.

Adds another £25 to the cost of the shirt.

My thoughts on Kama is I'll stick to their popovers

Re: Jake's Shirts

That’s the thing with the six buttons you have to wear a higher rise trouser or denim (the latter are hard to source), I have the V1 chambray and a navy Oxford which get a lot of wear.

Re: Jake's Shirts

Jake's now doing a special offer of 3 shirts for £500 in some new materials. They will also be making soon high rise trousers to compliment the six button shirts. I might have to start buying clothes again (I never really stopped to be honest)
