Chaps, I'm thinking of having a sportcoat made up, I've seen various pictures of sportscoats with a one piece back and shirred where the back panel meets the yoke. However, the pictures that I have seen only show the upper back treatment, and I can't discern from the photos whether this style has a full/half belt with/without pleats and typically patch pockets or not. I would like this jacket to be as distinguishable as possible from a conventional suit jacket, but I don't want to overload on stylistic details to achieve this. Do any of the members here have experience with or own such a jacket and could they advise on the typical stylistic features of this type of sportcoat.
Hello Jeeves, I think the sportcoat you are describing sounds like a bi-swing back, a detail I like by the way. This sportcoat is different, I think, but I cant find any pictures of it on the net to show the members, however, there is a picture of one in Flussers "Dressing the man" in the chapter on odd coats, it's the one that Clark Gable is wearing. I also think FNB has described one or metioned a preference amongst Neopolitans for this style in his thread on Neopolitan style.

Darren, the bottom of the back of the jacket could be like that, I cant see from my photo in my book, however the top of the back has a yoke like a shirt but without the centre seam, the back panel is then shirred into into it (I think that's the term, there seems to be tiny irregular pleats at the seam)...I think this type of sportcoat was popular in the 30's...by the way...
