Pray, How Doth Thy Garden Grow?

From my PM postbag:

"I'd love to chat to mpcsb about my Cotswold walled garden. The Winter Jasmin is still in bloom and this year's Snowdrops have just come into their own...
If I PM him from Andyland I'll lose a log-on which seems like a waste.

Have you an email address for him?

I only want to talk about the "Trad" garden with a like-minded enthusiast."

"Trad" gardening has be overlooked I feel...

No?

Re: Pray, How Doth Thy Garden Grow?

... My Yellow Aconites are well established and my Purple Primulas are just starting to open up too...

Should be a good crop of Daffodils this year judging by the young plants already through and the Tulips, although not so advanced, are doing well also. Last Autumn's heavy mulching was a good idea.

... But it is the progress of the crocuses which always interests me most at this time of year. Always such an uncertain flower in my garden. At the moment they are half-in-half-out, showing promise, but not yet living up to it.

A couple of years back I introduced Wild Violets into the garden as good ground cover - They grow like wild-fire and, although their flowers are short-lived, the combination of their fresh green heart-shaped leaves & their deep Violet-Purple flowers under the shadow of various shrubs and bushes is wonderful. So far they are showing a profusion of new leaves & I look forward to the flowers in the late Spring/early Summer.

... Pick them and they wilt within the hour. But the fragrance of them lasts on.

I like them best in a small engraved Silver Christening mug (my own from 1965) on the polished wood of the dining room table. A very simple centre-piece... Which is often the best kind.

... Another lovely low-growing ground cover plant idea is to introduce wild Strawberries into your garden. Lovely delicate little white and pink flowers, fresh Green crinkle-cut edged leaves and wonderully tastey little fruit in season no bigger than your little fingernail, but packed with flavour and goodness.
Plant them then leave them alone. Nature takes care of the rest.

I like them for breakfast spread like jam on good wholemeal toast.

Re: Pray, How Doth Thy Garden Grow?

I wonder if a Beech hedge would be an option for mpscb rather than a Yew one?

Faster growing so he would live to see it and lovely all year round. Yew would just stay the same dull green whatever the season, but Beech as Autumn and Winter comes turns a lovely Coppery hue blending in so well with the planting of that time of year.

They require miminal clipping and, to me, act as the barometer of the garden. I always know what's coming next from it's strong fresh young green buds in Spring or it's burnished Copper-coloured leaves in Autumn.

Why not give Beech a go?

Re: Pray, How Doth Thy Garden Grow?

I was charmed by my son's christmas wish list this year--the 5 year old gremlin didn't want any toys or video games or whatever his friends were excited about.  His list was:

1) a camera
2) paper currency that he could use to autonomously buy ice cream
3) a garden

3) was tough, as we live in an apartment--but we've started an herb garden on his window sill that is thriving nicely.  It's next to the bowl containing the colorful little betta fish Santa brought (he's also a keen amateur zoologist).

It's a very pleasant little spot to sit and read or play "farting porcupine," a complicated game with vague and changeable rules that he has devised.

Apologies for stories about the kid.  I do try to restrain myself, but he's so darn beguiling...

Re: Pray, How Doth Thy Garden Grow?

Here is a poem I have written about my garden:

Down the windy path I wend to seek a shady nook,
A' there to sit and contemplate alone with just my book.
Let Mr. Blackbird come and see what secrets I might keep,
For I will trick him as he comes by shamming I'm asleep!
What's that? A verdant rustle? Well! Who now disturbes my peace?
It's only Mr. Badger with his parti-coloured fleece -
Hush, hush, my friend, sit down with me and share my shady lair.
Come join with me as we sit still in solitude so rare.

If you would enjoy reading the next 42 verses of this poem please PM me.

Yours in the Garden -

James

My wife does the garden -- the grass is mine. Neither is doing much of anything at this date and latitude ...
