Is it an oxymoron to be a mod in 2008 and still have the need to drive a scooter that's 20+ years old?
Don't get me wrong, I love orginal Vespas/Lammies but I've always thought there was an interesting paradox of shunning modern Vespas in favor of vintage ones.
Wouldnt the real modernist spirit be to embrace a new model Vespa, one that runs more efficient, cleaner, and doenst break down every other weekend? I wouldnt think a mod back in 1964 would want a scooter from the 50s.
I can understand the rockabilly love for old cars from the 40s/50s since that whole scene has never been about NOW, always about BACK THEN, but I see the desire to ride old scooters as being very antithetical to the "modernist spirit".
Catch 22, eh?
I love the old style, but I know that the old spirit which the originals had back in the day means that today's kids who feel the same as they did are going to look very different to the Old Skool look. Not worse really, just different. And it will be right for them.

I'm with you & I'm with Lewis too.
I can see a continuity in terms of style (my main focus) and I can see a continuity in terms of attitude also.
The clothes I love are, if I'm honest, Old Skool. The attitude I love is... Whatever it is that keeps kids making up new scenes for themselves.
I'm not about to pretend that I know what's going on & join da kids on da street. That way madness lies.
But I'm happy to give them my support for wherever it is that they want to take the ethos of Modernism next while I sit back & watch in my old Ivy style get-up.
I got my groove. I want to see theirs.

Is some of this like trying to hold water in your hands? Seems once a "look" gets a name, the game's up and the kids have moved on, no?
7 more posts and Mr. Vaclav hits the 1,000 mark!
This should celebrated by all Bastards everywhere.
There is a very interesting middle way though isn't there? Where people take the old styles and do something new with them.
I'm thinking of DNA Groove here.
Again I'm with both Lewis AND Alex on this.
Moving forward informed by a knowledge of where we've come from.
Jason (Get Smart) is great at this too.
IMHO.
I really like what Claudio does a lot with DNA Groove, still way too obvious for me though, what with all those 60s details, you could mix and match with more contemporary gear of course, still it's not easy to keep it subtle but it can be done I agree.... I like Daniele's approach a lot as it happens, traditional ( again for want of a better word ) but youngish....
Sorry to have missed Daniele out - Agreed on him.
Head to toe DNA might be too much for me too. I still like seeing Claudio's ideas though.
Just realised questions may ( secretly ) be raised re-wearing a badge up one's sleeve. i.e. how about Stone Island, then ? To anticipate on that I'd say as long as you wear their gear outside of a context that's too obviously footy related you're safe
Reading through this thread - it strikes me that - wouldn`t AAAT be far better- if posters over there adopted the same thought process and attitude as some of the wise posters on this thread.
As an example - I`m not necessarily a Trad but I like Trad clothing.
I think Trad land could learn so much if they had posters like - Get smart- Alex and Lewis.
" this is the stuff I like - but please don`t label me "
Uncle will have more to say -I`m sure - and will be able to state it - in a much clearer and thought out manner.
I can remember Bomber posting about a guy dressing *Casual* for the footy and suited up Mod style for a club ; wasn't that a form of betrayal came the reply from some moddy boy poster.....I thought it was the height of Stylist fashion ( and said so ). Dressing for the occasion to the best of your knowledge and depending on the mood.....sums it all up for me really
