Re: Is There a Moral Dimension in Dressing Well?

Given that slobwear has become the accepted mode of dress today, my motivation, or at least aspiration, for dressing well is not so much to accord respect to those who neither show respect for me nor for themselves, but simply out of a sense of self esteem, self image and self expression.  That many of society's worst demons dress well does nothing to elevate them in my mind, although a polished mode of dress has been known to help soften their otherwise anti-social images.  The late mafia capo John Gotti, aka the Dapper Don, whose sharp manner of dress contributed to his folk hero stature, comes to mind.

"‘The sense of being perfectly well dressed gives a feeling of inner tranquility which even religion is powerless to bestow." Ralph Waldo Emerson
"Looking good and dressing well is a necessity. Having a purpose in life is not."  Oscar Wilde
