Nice article. Two bits of experience...
The Loro Piana socks, while nice looking and soft, shrink terribly. I received two pair as a stocking stuffer a few years back, and after the second washing I had to give them to my wife as they had shrunken to an impossibly small size.
The Falke Luxury Collection is amazing. I have never been a real sock guy, but I biked up a bushel of these on STP recently after having seen them at Falke in Vienna. The retail prices are amazingly high, but they make all other socks feel like sandpaper. The wool-silk blends and Sea Island cottons are truly unreal. I would suggest them with no hesitation at the prices STP charges.
I've bought many a pair o' Falkes, though not at STP, and I'm surprised that Falke isn't touted more on the August Fora. They are very nice. The cotton sport sock, German-made, "Ace" model, is the best general traditional tennis sock I've found. Though I like the USA Wigman sock and the Rohner outta Switzerland too.
My above the calf socks always droop down around my ankles. I have to pull them up several times a day. It occurs to me that I do not know if that is normal or not as I have no one to ask.
