The only time I've known a guy to make auto bodies by hand where one could definitely argue that it was "better" than machine was where machine wasn't really available or cost-effective. Like a one-off fender for a guy who crashed his rare car. This guy I know will literally "sculpt" the metal. But he doesn't consider himself an, uh, artisan, but a sheetmetal worker. Union, blue-collar, and whatnot.
