Most of the above is Brooks.
The band also shopped at The Ivy Shop & I don't doubt J. Simons too.
Their fans later came to The Ivy to photo the chair on which Kevin had sat.
True story.
KR was a Squire shop customer in '69 & one who knew the look as Ivy. The term 'Preppy' was unknown over here then for these clothes. He re-visited the style post-Preppy so I think he was just using a zeitgeist word to try to explain himself to the music journalists (who often know little about clothes).
Looking at the above you can see the 'Preppy' influence though.
In other shots he/they look more Ivy League.
Purely in styling terms it was a tour de force.
I really rate this pic of good old Billy Adams down the bottom here:

This is how a pop star looks?
Yes. It can be.
When last I saw Rowland on TV he'd taken to wearing ladies' lingerie exclusively. Is there an inevitable slide from preppy to fake working-class to lingerie? Where does it all end?
Ol Chums,
Preppie done well. Wouldnt change an item of that pic.
What is ironic is that to them it was costume, and yet they look natural adn cool.
Cheerio.
Absolutely.
It was a look, a style. One of many they played with.
The Style Council played with elements of The Look too.
Just another wardrobe option.
Just to say that KR's shirt is Brooks in this shot.
A matter of no importance.

If you buy the CD of DSMD ('Directors cut', or whatever it's called) you get a booklet with more photo shoots -
KR in a Shetland with hornrims, etc.
Masterful styling.
Very interesting thread, boys. Keep the pics/links coming.

Discussed this several years ago with some people, one objective would be KR's take was too subversive ( which I liked to be honest ). Have to admit I didn't know too much about the IL style then and some of the nuances were lost on me I suppose. Have learned a thing ot two since then but I still prefer the clean cut version over the sloppy one, if you will ( can't do scruffy myself, simply impossible no matter what ).
I do like the neo prep thing though, it's a young man's game I think, but I like the playfulness of another take on a classic theme they seem to be into....same as KR back in the day IMO. The fact that he had to sell records may have come into it, but I do think his aim was/is true. He was after all an original Skinhead/Suedehead who loved the Mod thing....I can still relate to that. I love those pics anyhow......

Check the proper Ivy rise on all the trousers Kevin & Billy wear in the first vid.
... I've posted these before, I know.
Can't find the vid for 'My National Pride' just now - Very good clothes half way & a bit through when Kev goes to church. Nice Brooks 'Makers' Herringbone Tweed with welted back seam, etc.
Anyone else got it?
Cheers!
