Living as I do in The Sticks, I rarely run across hipsters. So as not to be caught unawares when visiting metropolitan areas, I have familiarized myself with Robert Lanham's Hipster Handbook. The non-hipster is most likely to run across the Waitstaff And Service Hipster as identified by Lanham's taxonomy. These under-educated would-be uber hip types with no money behind them tax the patience of non-hipsters by working in Starbucks where the meet the customer with a bizarre blend of cluelessness and derision.
One occasionally spots a hipster here in The Sticks. This is contemptible as it has to be a complete pose.
Agreed. It's as bad as AAAT.
Only AmJAcks have any reality about them in the US.
Living in LA it's hipster central. We might even be Hipster capital of the world, even moreso than NYC, since we have "hollywood" and the weather is better geared towards hipster-chic
I don't hate them per se, but I agree with the article about how they "stand for nothing", which is fine, but they appropriate iconic elements into their look that did mean something to a lot of people. I totally relate to the bit about how they wear something that only those "in the know" would wear and when you saw someone wearing it, you knew you were part of a bigger picture. Like when Doc Martens were only worn by punks/skins before it became mall-hipster gear.
At the end of the day it all means nothing. They do their thing, and regardless of motives, most of them are actually nice and interesting people to talk with.
I hated them growing up. Now I just laugh. They are really just sad, dumb people.
Like the term Icing, that hits it on the head. No substance. Here's a fucking idea, go read a damn book.
I find that it is easier just to hate everybody.
How frightfully sad: one large group of people who dress alike in order to be different, feel rage at other people dressing like themselves. How will they be able to know who is really the unique conformist, and who is the conformist conformist? Such traumas.
I suppose the hipster subculture is more "pleasing" than say some other unfortunate groups, like angst-ridden high school goths, or God forbid, the Youth Church League.
