Re: The Cardigan Makes A Comeback

Oh puh-lease!

"Nearly three-quarters of women, or 72%, found men in cardigans sexy, with 87% of women saying the cardigan denoted a man comfortable and confident with his sexuality."  Those stats wouldn't have anything to do with an earlier paragraph saying how Hollywood had adopted the cardigan as the latest fashion trend, would they now?  And hasn't Ralph Lauren tried several times in years past -- without success -- to make the cardigan cool?

I'm so trad you might call me stodgy, but a cardigan?  No thanks.  Trendy ain't trad.

Re: The Cardigan Makes A Comeback

I'm getting into cardigans because they provide, in my mind, a bit of a finished appearance when I don't want to wear a jacket and don't want to wear just a shirt.  On a more neurotic level, I prefer sweaters that button and unbutton so that I don't stretch out the sweater while pulling it off, esp. if it's cashmere.  I recently saw an interview with the late actor Jack Lemmon who was wearing a cardigan over a thin turtleneck and thought he looked great.

I love Merchant Ivory films and Remains of the Day is a favorite,  Lord Whatshisname wears a cardigan in his library when he is alone and very casually dressed.  he does wear a dinner jacket at the right times (im guessing) but i think i like the casual cardigan in the library with the fireplace look.  hey a kid can dream eh?

You love him? He is hephaistion.

What a lovely picture^.

David Beckham now appears to favour the cardi.

In 'Gentleman' Roetzel waxes enthusiastic about the 'knitted jacket', citing the small pockets and the buttons as plus points over other forms of knitwear.

I have always liked them - they do have skinhead credentials of course....

The wearer looks a bit wooden, but nice outfit otherwise, esp the Sulka sweater smile

Re: The Cardigan Makes A Comeback

Bing wore a cardigan, and looked very cool.  Deano sported one occasionally, if memory serves, not looking any less suave for it.  Somewhere I've a clip of Jimmy Stewart sporting a cardigan, and he was usually pretty dapper.

But as someone else pointed out, so did Mr. Rogers, and we all know what that denotes!  No, I think the cardigan is one of those items that was important in in its time, but some things just don't need to make a repeat appearance.  I never want to see a Nehru jacket or a leisure suit or mock turtleneck fleece short-sleeve shirts with the half-zipper.  We could go further back in time, and realize that no man need a full-length raccoon coat, or spats, or a bowler.  Yet every single one of those items was a standard item in its day for men of a certain age.

And yes, Russell, I see the cardigan's appearance TODAY as trendy, even if it was trad in its day.

^ Thanks for clearing that up for me. It wasn't a loaded question.

If an OCBD became trendy would it stop being Trad?

Pure cashmere is running a sale on cardigans.  They're based in the UK, making it an especially good deal for those overthe pond.  You might be able to receive an add'l discount if you ask for a "source code" for new customers.  Very high-quality, 4 ply sweaters they make in their own factory.

Re: The Cardigan Makes A Comeback

Absolutely - It's all about the classics.

Cardigans have never been 'in' or 'out' over here so they've remained 'traditional' for us.
