Solid-colored silk pocket squares--sinful?

In a recent thread on pocket squares on SF, a number of posters were absolutely scathing in their contempt for solid colored silk squares. I have seen the sentiment expressed before on SF (I don't ever recall seeing it in Andyland, however.) I have never quite comprehended this one. I don't see a solid-colored square any more heinous that a solid-colored necktie. Obviously if it is paired with a solid-colored tie of the same color, it is a sartorial sin, but one would certainly say the same of patterned tie-square sets. Is this animus shared by FNB regulars or not? If so, what precisely is "wrong" with solid-colored squares? Most hostile commentators merely dismiss them as "cheap," "cheesy" or something of that sort.

I have some beautiful solid colored pocket squares.  They make a wonderful foil to a patterned tie.

l find myself going away from full colour squares in the daytime. l'm looking at squares with a some sort of pattern on them now, they just look more interesting. l'm bored with full colour squares at the moment.

They must be kidding wink

For a nice evening out, a good solid silk square tucked reverse puff style is a complement to a good dark suit.

Solids are the backbone of a good collection of squares. I like patterns and wear them more often than solids, but if you've got stuff going on in your shirt, tie or suit fabric, you need a little restful spot of solid color. They have their purposes.

I really wonder what some of the people over there really wear ( as opposed to what they post, which is often contrived)

I think there's a real tendency to fetishize certain pieces of clothing. Matt, I remember an excellent point you made before about how people on the forums tend to pick really beautiful-looking shoes without considering how they might actually fit into an outfit. I think the same thing happens with pocket squares; as individual objects, they are really easy to admire. I really have to temper myself when shopping for them--maybe 3/4 of my pocket square collection were mistakes.

This isn't to say that an intricately patterned square can't work, but a solid square can be really useful in harmonizing an outfit, even if it is kind of boring on its own.
