I think the quotations that Tony has dredged up remind me what I liked about ol' 'Arry's posts. I have no idea whether they are true or not, whether or whether like his ol' chum, Nick Smith, he'd claim them, if pressed, as composites, but he could certainly paint a tableau that had the ring of truth.
