Is seersucker too old man?

Trad/ivy/preppy what ever.  Is seersucker best worn by older guys?  i have a pair of shorts in a blue/white seersucker that i like but I don't know if I'd get a suit.  I live in the upper midwest so the southern thing is a bit beyond me - both in practice and in mind.  i figure i'll get a good answer here.  Thanks for your help.

Nah, it's not too old.  But don't rely on me.  My own mother tells me I look like a stick in the mud.

Re: Is seersucker too old man?

I can't wear the suit over here (and Lord knows I've tried!) But shorts, shirts, trousers, jackets, ties - All are great.

Go "NeoPrep" if you want to update it & see what J.Crew do with it when Summer comes. Bust a Seersucker jacket with pale Khakis in a slim-cut, 3 button (darted) version if that's your thing.

I LOVE Seersucker. It's my summer Corduroy. A great fabric. There's no age limit.

J.

Re: Is seersucker too old man?

Mike, don't fret because you had the misfortune to be born and/or brought up anywhere other than the south.  We can forgive that; just don't come and complain about the heat, humidity, percentage of rednecks to preps, iced tea, the differences in bbq, or Tennessee Vols football.  (For those of you paying attention -- yes, I've been in Colorado for the past 18 years, but was born and spent the first 30 years of my life in the south.)

Now that we've got that out of the way, seersucker is not just for "older guys".  SS suits worn with a white OCBD, bow tie, and bucks are a mark of distinction in hot weather.  SS odd pants are still ok, but usually with a white OCBD and brown loafers.  SS shorts are a bit affected, but if y'all have hot, humid weather sometime late summer, betcha could pull it off.

And forget what your wife/gf/mother/female friends say -- SS done well is a classic look, from little kids to little old men.

Seersucker suits (maybe w/o the bow-tie tho') look great. Kinda summer wedding, garden party style, perhaps?

Got an unadventurous b/w gingham seersucker shirt from Land's End on the way at the moment, which I'm looking forward to.

Seersucker jackets get a mention in the OSRH as kit for Henry in hot weather.  Did Sloaney types really do this?  Did it catch on in the broader population, like the Barbour?

Re: Is seersucker too old man?

I have never had anything but compliments in a seersucker suit. These compliments ranged from the typical "well-dressed old guy saying it was a nice suit" compliments to having good luck picking up phone numbers from cute girls.  One time I wore it with white bucks downtown here and someone who I might euphemistically term an "urban gentleman" told me I looked 'pimpin' and wanted to know where I bought it. He said it in a way that made it one of the higher compliments I've received. I second the advice to maybe not wear the bow with it every time, though.  I've tried it with a couple of different ties, and after I started a thread on here asking for some new suggestions, got some more good ideas.  My favorite remains a white shirt, navy repp tie with narrow yellow stripes, and the bucks, or the same except navy tie with white dots.  Both of these make the suit stand out rather than the tie and keep it from running too far into GTH territory.

You can also just go with the jacket for less formal occasions.  I have no qualms about wearing jacket and white cotton pants out to any bar above dive status in the summer (since other people now seem to be wearing jackets to bars (no ties) in greater number), just ditch the tie and the white shoes for that.

Girls in my experience--at least where I'm from--are partial to seersucker.  I know this sounds like bullshit (and probably is...that's what a JD teaches you to do best) but maybe for them it is sensual in some way what with the ridges and crinkles?  After moot court arguments my first year, I went out with my parents (who came to watch) to a nicer seafood restaurant.  The hostess was, I would say, in her late 20s, and she was so taken either with the suit (or, I hope, me in it) that she felt it necessary to actually run her hand down the front.  My parents proceeded to make fun of this for the rest of the evening but the point is it intrigued her to an extent that she really did what would be stepping over the line of restaurant maitre'd in any other situation. Maybe she knew I wouldn't complain.

Long story short: Don't be afraid to wear seersucker, just keep it short of over the top GTH and you will be looking good, not to mention feeling comfortable in the heat!

Depends what you wear it with. I saw someone wearing a blue and white one with a navy tee and it looked new and energetic. A ralph lauren tee or a nice mercerized one, not a Hanes brand. Kind of a Marina look or night out in the Hot city in July or August; outside trattoria stuff.

Ill bet wearing it with a "Zephyr"  100s x 50s quality summer quality gingham check even in mixed colors would look smart with or without a tie.

The answer is...only if you are an old man.

Let's do the young thing! Or at least the middle aged thing!

Re: Is seersucker too old man?

The only downside of seersucker I can think of is the shortage of high-quality 100% cotton seersucker fabric.  My tailor, who has just a small bolt of ss cloth, which might have been used up with my suit, had to source the fabric from a mill in Argentina of all places, and there are no longer any American sources of good seersucker.

Re: Is seersucker too old man?

Chris Despos had some very nice looking seersucker when I was in his shop.  He too remarked on the difficulty of finding it.  I ended up getting a pair of pink seersucker pants from him and look forward to wearing them in the summer.

I also had a sportcoat made up in Italy from a wide wale seersucker, the likes of which I had never seen before.  It is a very interesting fabric.

Since I don't anticipate wearing either a whole lot, I can't imagine that they will wear out quickly.  At leas I hope they do not.

Grayers ol' chum,

I've long admired ol' Raph's work on that suit.

I've seen the seersucker from Loro Piana and think it okay.  Have you seen it, and if so, what's your opinion on it.  It was the nicest I've seen in recent times.  Probably better than my Brooks circa '85 or so.
