"Trad": People Get Ready -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQqTxK7VhSk

Anybody else starting to get ready for the Sockless Season at the moment?

I've just got off the phone to a fellow English Ivy League fan who informs that he's started with the fake tan on the ankles already this year to get that sun-kissed, honey-toned, beachside look which is so desirable when hanging around inner-city London bars.

He's also bought a pair of these (not sure which) in a half size too big which he is currently soaking in a heavy concentration of salted waler to get that nicely salt-stained & ruined look. He informs he's done this before to good effect and that the shoes shrink nicely to size.

Not bad copies of the old US Boat shoe I think and at a good price too.

Re: "Trad": People Get Ready -

The ritual burning of the socks will happen soon in Annapolis.  It is time.  Skiing has gone to hell here in PA for the year so it may as well get warm so I can get down to the boat.

Those Chatham shoes cost twice a pair of Sperrys or about 1.5x Sebagos in the US.

Gosh!

We get the imported US brands more expensively over here. I'd no idea.

I`m with you uncle - I didn`t think the chatham shoes were a bad price-for British prices anyway.

I have purchased and quite liked Marks and spencers deck shoes before now and got a couple of years wear out of them -I think they are about £40

You're getting buggered by a barge pole over there, Russell.  The standard Docksider is $80 direct from Sebago's website.  At 85 GBP, they're a rich guy's beater shoe in the UK!

What a world!

Most of my kit is old US bought with updates from Mr. Simons & US mail order items. I've not been in the US in person since '90.

I'm looking forward to seeing this season's Cheapo Landsend Madras half-sleeve BDs too. There's usually one or two good patterns at a give-away price.

J. Press had a (rather 'so what?') patch madras last year which Landsend had had the year before at a fraction of the price.

This was the one:

Ya gotta shop around!

Best Shorts?

I rate Bean's LL Chino 9" flatfronts.

They even have a Watch pocket / Change pocket thingy!

Re: "Trad": People Get Ready -

What do you mean "starting to get ready for the Sockless Season"?  I've worn socks only a few times this year when dressing casually, most notably when the snow is over the top of my boat shoes and I have to switch to Bean boots.

I am absolutely an outsider.

And I wish we had some Japanese cats on the forum to really open our eyes...

The problem with the US is that you have a head full of Lisa & Ralph if you are unlucky.

If we are talking classic style then we need to look beyond the re-hashes (Prep/Trad) and back to Patrick's Dad.

Re: "Trad": People Get Ready -

Just picked up a pair of Sebago Knockabout slip-on boat shoes.  I went for Tan over Brown. Probably not Trad/Ivy/Prep. But then I don’t sail.

When I do get on a boat it’s to take the ferry into the city (San Francisco).  And I wear proper shoes.

Re: "Trad": People Get Ready -

Bean's are cheapo & I think better quality than Landsend's.
I had some Reds cut down into shorts last year (they'd gone White at the knees) and I agree with your idea of giving your old chinos a second life in this way.
