Modern Jazz Style.
I'm a Jazz fan first & foremost who initially got into clothes largely due to the style of the classic American menswear shown on the sleeves of classic American Jazz albums and so this is a thread to highlight that style.

The first obvious comment to make about the above is that the picture is tiny & that's absolutely how it was back then ('78, '79) even with 12" LP sleeves. You had to hunt for clues.
This pic of HS is new to me but is typical of the kind of image I used to search for in Ray's Jazz shop in London.
Check the shoulder line.
Undarted 3 button with the top two buttoned. The bottom button is undone & the jacket drawn back as H. sits. Looking at the lapel line I suspect that if the top button were undone it would naturally roll to a 'tipped' 3/2. You can see an obvious tension there.
Plain White shirt with barrel cuffs. The collar line suggests a tie which you can't see. The shirt may be a BD (they so often were) or not.
What is the jacket? Midnight Blue Silk? Dunno. It's very lightweight - Check the sleeve.
The shoulder line stands out most for me in that pic.

Along with Chet Baker Bill was one of the first white guys I ever saw wearing Ivy League (not counting American tourists in Fortnum & Mason's Food Hall). Later I would find Cary Grant, Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, etc., wearing various versions of classic American style as I explored films.
The key thing with Bill & Chet was that they were both geniuses and also that they were junkies. Their 'square' look (to us now) was actually a very hip look in its time. That gets forgotten.
We have "Trad" on the internet these days which revives the 80's "Preppy" craze, but nobody seems to revive the reality of the Ivy League style's heyday in the 50's & 60's when these clothes were young & fashionable.
