How close does it have to fit?

Longtime lurker. I did a search and could not find this here.

So I went to a thrift shop and for $8 acquired a Norman Hilton suit, made in 1993 according to the label inside a pocket, working sleeve buttons (my first suit with those). The shoulders go about a half-inch past my shoulders, but I think you can't really notice unless you feel them. Too big? How much is too much?

The other question is it's a kind of beige, although in some light in looks almost pale olive. I don't know the weight of the wool, but it is not heavy. I suppose this would mean that it's a spring, summer, early autumn suit? Would it look odd to wear such a suit during not-so-cold winter days?

Hey, at first, I thought the $8 price for the suit was a typo.  That's beyond a steal and certainly worth salvaging.  Take the suit to the best local tailor you can find with experience in alterations and have him fit the suit to your body.  Even if you have to spend a little extra money, it's still a great investment.

Better a little too loose, eh?

All depends how it looks on you but a half inch never killed anyone and like Marc said, take it to a competent tailor and get an assesment. If you like, feel free to ask these guys if they know an alterations tailor in your area.

If you live in a large City in the USA, I think it might be odd to wear a suit that was both light in color and summery in weave to the office, even one with a more open set of dressing guidelines.

Thanks, guys. I did not know they could alter shoulders. Although they are soft shoulders with very little padding.

Marc & FNB: You guys should know better than anyone that a half inch past the shoulders is so small a measure to be largely meaningless. Craig should leave the shoulders alone.
