I wonder if the seven-fold tie has seven folds because that's the appropriate number of folds for the amount of material normally prescribed for a necktie, originally, or if there couldn't be another reason?
I was reading the Iliad this morning and in book 7 Ajax is described as having a bronze shield covered with 7 layers of leather.
(Book not in front of me but will provide reference later).
As the shield is a literal piece of armor, and the tie is a sartorial piece of armor, as it were, I wonder if the two can't be connected?
