Chums,
The old boy did have top style, if dubious judgement in women and diplomacy.

Cheerio.
Some great photographs in this thread. He certainly led the way for American styles.
Social climbers loved the Nazis in London too... Funny that. Of course when it stopped being fashionable they all pretended not to, but for a while it was rather chic in certain aspirational quarters to act crazy as a Mitford and be a Hitler fan.
My paternal Grandparents (although not aspirational, just sociable) saw quite a bit of this world in London dining with Von Ribbentrop and even enjoying some good times in Berlin between the wars. Nazis were often very entertaining & generous people.
Of course when the penny dropped with my folks that they'd been involved with something as nasty as the Nazis they were very upset, but to their credit they never tried to re-write their past lives and even seemed to quite enjoy telling people that they'd been fooled by the 'glamour' of it all at the time.
Such bright young things!
The Nazis actively courted members of the British aristocracy (and social climbers) amongst whom they had something of a following. The Duke of Windsor was evidently amongst them. He was promised his throne back if and when the Nazis conquered England. The FBI even had been passed intelligence that the Duke and Duchess were passing secrets to the Nazis to undermine the Allies' war efforts.

Fuck politics and people's agendas, can we talk about the Duke's contribution to men's clothing? This thread is turning into a mockery of BBR.
Maybe we can roll Henry Ford into this? Just for shits and giggles, of course.
Any other famous Nazi sympathizers we can "out"?
Fuck off...

I honestly believe the Duke's contribution to men's clothing is bigger than anyone's in the 20th century, and we owe him a lot for the comfortable, relaxed, classic clothing we wear today. He was always smart and clever and aggressive in his clothing choices, unlike Barbera who is fastidious and perfect in his clothing choices. I'll take the former over the latter.
newphw, just a few xos from your affectionate uncle.

DOW had great style. This is an area that needs to be explored in more detail.
Love those spectator loafers. Were they black and white, or brown and white? I wonder.
Thanks TV, these are wonderful photos.
Wouldnt mind a cigar myself.
So Iammatt...you wanted this thread. Any thoughts?
Well, the man has been trashed and re-hashed so many times.
His style was apparently the equivalent of a shock warrior in his day, not unlike the Punks in the Seventies. he did what he wanted, wore what he wanted. He had things made specially for special functions. We miss some of thiose details like that library reading jacket which was something like an Eisenhower jacket in windowpane tweed. He wore his clothes to death, so he got full and comfortable use out of them. And like Churchill he doesnt seem to have cared what ahppened to them, looks like he had a good time in his things and damn the spilled sherry.
He was a clothes wearing man.
