The Nazis actively courted members of the British aristocracy (and social climbers) amongst whom they had something of a following. The Duke of Windsor was evidently amongst them. He was promised his throne back if and when the Nazis conquered England. The FBI even had been passed intelligence that the Duke and Duchess were passing secrets to the Nazis to undermine the Allies' war efforts.

I honestly believe the Duke's contribution to men's clothing is bigger than anyone's in the 20th century, and we owe him a lot for the comfortable, relaxed, classic clothing we wear today. He was always smart and clever and aggressive in his clothing choices, unlike Barbera who is fastidious and perfect in his clothing choices. I'll take the former over the latter.

Well, the man has been trashed and re-hashed so many times.

His style was apparently the equivalent of a shock warrior in his day, not unlike the Punks in the Seventies. he did what he wanted, wore what he wanted. He had things made specially for special functions. We miss some of thiose details like that library reading jacket which was something like an Eisenhower jacket in windowpane tweed. He wore his clothes to death, so he got full and comfortable use out of them. And like Churchill he doesnt seem to have cared what ahppened to them, looks like he had a good time in his things and damn the spilled sherry.

He was a clothes wearing man.
