I had these on the shelf and just finished watching the latter, watched the former late last night.
Richard Widmark belongs in the underrated section of those occasional magazine polls.
Amen.
Both are excellent films. Richard Widmark's sardonic smile lends itself perfectly to the Noir style. His portrayal as the neer do well Harry Fabian continues to move as the darker side of human dreams dashed.
I cant remember Pickup on South Street's wardrobel but Night and the City has some excellent clothes in it. Widmark was something of a dandy himself.
Outside of the ubiquitous classics featuring Astaire, Grant, Powell, Menjou, etc. my most vivid sartorial memories on film are from the following:
Ray Milland in The Big Clock
Clifton Webb in Laura
Ralph Meeker in Kiss Me Deadly
Jimmy Stewart in Vertigo
