Re: Ben Silver follows Andover / Eljos

Speaking of Ben Silver:  they sent me a card for free shipping on outlet items (maybe it will work on other i-net ordered items) until sometime in August).  PM me if you want the code.

Re: Ben Silver follows Andover / Eljos

I see what you mean.

- I enjoyed re-reading the musings of Miles on the previous page too. "Trad-influenced" indeed!
Writing on the same subject at this point I'd say that Ben Silver really kicked off the Internet Trad thing IMO. They were Harris' first port of call way back at the start in '04.
Very interesting... AAAT starts with colour & Ben Silver and has to work its way from the Southern look to the New England look. Maybe this is why Preppy is still such a strong element in Trad? The love of colour and the lighter touch?

Good to muse on as ever. Thanks for reminding me of the company, Horace. They are forever slipping off my radar.

J.

What of ,the Preppy (Southern/Virginia?) and Trad (New England) dialectic?

I think you're right too & there's nothing to be done about it apart from to encourage them to be honest Cavaliers. They really don't need to pretend to be Puritans.

And I'd like to think that those AAAT Trads who matter no longer do.

More on Silver from Tucker's Blog:

http://tnsil.blogspot.com/2008/05/ben-silver-beefy-oxford.html

I crop up in the comments section & I do mean what I say. Much of AAAT is an exaggeration of the Traditional American style I think.

And I remain very open to debate this point.

Edit: Goodness, my comment on Tucker's blog is full of typos!

Re: Ben Silver follows Andover / Eljos

I think you might be wrong. i have never lived in Charleston, but have visited fairly often. (Pawleys Island taxpayer here). The city of Charleston had no money from after the Civil War until maybe WWII when the shipyard brought in money. The part of the city south of Broad Street is quite well preserved. Nothing was built in Charleston in the first part of the 20th century because there was no money. The buildings began to be preserved in the 1960s before they could be torn down for something new. It is one of America's loveliest cities. at least the section by the bay. Go a little bit inland and there are substantial poor sections.
I think the style of the natives is fairly classic.

I wonder how useful "beefy" shirts are in warm weather states. I think they would be useful here (I am in a northern state, with snow etc.), but not in 95+ degree weather with 100% humidity. Maybe Southerners don't sweat.

All of this stuff is beyond strange. It is only clothes. It is quite easy to understand. People from England should stop writing in. Little wonder why they lost an empire.

Re: Ben Silver follows Andover / Eljos

I just can't get my mind around shirts referred to as "beefy".  WTF?!

Same thing with the "beef roll".  What's up with that?
