Re: Rediscovering The Barbershop

Thankfully- I have never visited a "unisex" salon and have through habbit  visited the barbers every 2-3 weeks - non the less I found the article very intresting - if for no other reason than to confirm what I already knew-and allow my chest to puff in manly pride.

Re: Rediscovering The Barbershop

l could easily maintain my own hair, but l choose to go to my local barbershop shop. Why? Well, he's like a mate, + lots of good chats and good interaction among the local blokes getting haircuts. lt's a mans only barber. l prefer it this way because we can have blokey talk without having to worry about women being in earshot. The barber shop is a pleasurable place to be at.

My barber is a big supporter of community activities, so l choose to support his business and small local business too.

Re: Rediscovering The Barbershop

I wish that a local news organization would write about Phil's Barbershop, been in New Haven since the 1930s.

Re: Rediscovering The Barbershop

stand in the line: but no more Ivy haircuts for 14 bucks, like Cyrus Vance used to get. where are you going for an Ivy haircut? there are better places for pizza, and you don't have to stand in line.

Mark: you are starting to sound like a Yalie, and you used to sound like a sophisticated New Yorker. But I am impressed about your familiarity with a provincial town!

Re: Rediscovering The Barbershop

One of the better--and earlier--Sartorialist posts had some pictures of an Italian barbershop, which I thought was charming--chrome atomizers and all.

This also reminds me of Isherwood's novel, "Berlin Stories." In it, Mr.Norris says he has never shaved himself before and always has a person from the local barber come up to his apartment in the morning and do it for him.
