Re: Little Ivy

I always thought it curious when a certain kind of American advertises where he or she attended university ,as if it earns points.  A kind of oneupmanship goes on, for the socially insecure.  neutral

It's just as annoying I suppose when Englishmen of a certain vintage drone on and on about their schooldays. neutral

Re: Little Ivy

Small ivies, eh?

A term to be added to public Ivies, Black ivies, irish ivy, ect.

Perchance Ivy for everyone applies to the universities as well.

Re: Little Ivy

I've never heard "Little Ivy" or "Little Ivies" applied to schools like Swarthmore or Amherst. I was under the impression that term applied to Ivy League schools that are not Harvard, Yale, or Princeton: Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, and U. Penn.

Re: Little Ivy

"Little Three" is the term I remember.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Ivies

I've also heard of the the trio of Wesleyan, Williams, and Amherst referred to as "the Pot Ivies (maybe in the OPH?);" I believe the original meaning of the term had to do with the smaller, "potted" nature of the institutions, though other interpretations are possible.

Re: Little Ivy

And they do say that it is the smaller institutions that really keep the OPH flame burning these days, not the Ivys anyway.
Apparently this is especially true in the South I am told.
The Ivy League style is no longer Ivy League!

Re: Little Ivy

^ Makes sense though.
Certainly our Internet Trad originally comes from the smaller places in the South. On that I base my OPH comment.
- But I'm not an OPH fan so my comment is hardly a celebration of this fact.

Re: Little Ivy

Oh my gosh, these responses have been a feast for the eye. a few random responses. oxford has offered an MBA for at least 20 years. There are substantial differences in Oxford degrees. There has been a little Ivy league for far longer then there has been a Big Ivy League.
" Mean, Vicious and Crazy" I am going to steal that phrase and put it on my gravestone.

I have no idea who captain preppy is, and I have no idea what his allegiances are. But in my book he ain't no American. I would have an interest in dating his second wife though.

PS: the best thing that ever happened to America's elite schools is that they bounced out the doofus wasps and let in women and all the rest of america.
Captain Preppy, this one is from the heart: May you and your ilk forever go to hell.
I often write about clothes. I sometimes write about my country. I will not tolerate this nonsense on any thread that I have written into. I invite your reply.

Re: Little Ivy

No one ever suffered from enduring Wesleyan's supposed diversity. and it was a supposed diversity in my day. Hey, wasps had to compete. and what is so bad about that?

Re: Little Ivy

and it that tiny litle world in the early 70s, the boys were hard pressed to compete with the girls. some wasp boys survived. a lot didn't. the world had changed for the better.

Re: Little Ivy

Captain Preppy: to be frank. Your ass would be kicked five times from Friday if you ever tried to approach any of your beloved institutions today. Civilization does indeed progress.
