Young People Nowadays!

My Dear and  Distinguished Sirs,

One painfully regrets intruding upon you fine Gentlemen with an exclamation of discontent, but just now, as one was parading from a local restaurateur's to one's private club, one witnessed a young man (though certainly not young  Gentleman) of approximately seventeen years of age walking with a young woman, and his jacket was flying about un-fastened.

Now normally one takes a liberal view of the sad behaviour of others, but our  unkempt youth are increasingly bold in their shows of contempt for proper tradition - and - infinitely worse - in heaping scorn and derision upon Gentleman such as oneself, who go to great lengths to dress properly. After one halted and rebuked the young man about his slovenly attire, this young person directed a string of epithets at one, and threatened, whilst laughing with his mirthful consort, to do something unspeakable with my top hat.

This is not a new trend by any means; I oft see  these hooligans wearing trainers even inside of banks and public buildings. If these  waifs cannot be taught how to behave whilst young, what  can we expect  of them when they come into full  maturity?

Hence one has just finished drafting a missive to the Home-Secretary, the Prime-Minister, and the HRH The Duke of Edinburgh proposing a scheme to  ensure that youth are - forcibly if necessary - attired in ways conducive for a civil society - with strict  penalties for mocking the dress of Gentleman - and of course Ladies. When the happy response is received, one will pass it along to you all. I remain, Dear Sirs,

Your Most Obedient and Humble Servant,

Theodore Ebeneezer Alphonsus St Bonar.

Esteemed Sir,

It seems to me that the appropriate response to this impudent young puppy when he responded to your gentlemanly admonition concerning his slovenly appearance with a string of epithets would have been to have given him a good caning! Beat the wretch within in an inch of his worthless life, and maybe it will impress upon him the importance of keeping a civil tongue in his head!

One would be hard-pressed not to slap such hooligans with a fine glove and then proceed to hit them with one's walking cane with the leaded gold and gem-encrusted handle--the gems serve as extra ammunition in the battle against smarmy facial expressions. Nasty scars abound.

Re: Young People Nowadays!

My Dear and  Distinguished Sirs,

Thank-you ever so much for the kind words of comradeship and encouragement. Whilst one did have one's walking-stick during the incident, one rather feared being put in the dock charged with some frightful felony. However, I consoled myself then as now with the sure knowledge that he has had his just reward, that being the greatest possible disgrace on mortal earth, to wit, the curse of not being a Gentleman.

I  remain, dear  Sirs,

Your Most Obedient and Humble Servant,

Theodore Ebeneezer Alphonsus St Bonar, Esquire
