The Guardian backs 'preppy' style for the summer

http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/gallery/2008/may/29/fashion1?picture=334461321

I'm not too sure what the writer/ stylist thinks this style is. Of course the piece is all about high street shops etc, but surely a little more effort could come up with some much better stuff.

To this end, IMHO Uniqlo does the best cheap, mainstream Ivy/ preppy looking stuff in the UK. Picked up some great seersucker shorts there last week.

It's not J Press, but some of their gear has the right look. I think being Japanese must have something to do with it.

Anyone else like Uniqlo for cheap wardrobe staples?

Don't expect too much - most of it is H&M/ Gap type things. But they do get it right every now and again.

I've bought V neck merino sweaters, decent cardigans, colourful socks and the aforementioned seersucker shorts lately. Teamed with other, better quality stuff they can work well.

I even saw a b/w herringbone, natural shoulder jacket with a 3/2 lapel roll in there once. It was somewhat spoiled by the S-M-L sizing though.

Cheap and disposable is the way to see it.

Very Interesting:

http://www.uniqlo.co.uk/catalogue/men/outerwear/80293-navy-linen-cotton-jacket

It's darted, but it has a nice shoulder line and is a swelled-edged 3/2 roll. Four on the cuff, slim-cut without much waist suppression, & isn't that a 'Butterfly' lining inside?

£19.99!

No metion of vents.

whoa there! maybe a navy linen one and a pair of the madras shorts they also have on offer.  looks pretty nice.  but for 19.99, i have to wonder if a strong breeze won't cause it to disintegrate.

They had Madras shirts a couple of years ago.

Not 'guaranteed to bleed' but very good and reasonably-priced.
