There is a longtime association between dandyism and the sport of boxing, from the standpoint both of participator and spectator. Dandyisn being a celebration of the masculine and all dandies interested in sports of all types.
A question arises,. If someone in the community is harassing one, would an invitation to box be in order?
This is perhaps a more modern form of "taking up the gauntlet," in which one gentleman would challenge another to a duel by slapping him in the face with his glove, or gauntlet, which he would then drop on the ground. If the gentleman so challenged picked up the glove -- took up the gauntlet -- it meant he accepted the challenge. At one time, this would entail a duel with swords, and with the advent of firearms, duelling with pistols.
On this latter, I believe Incroyable might be inclined to offer a cogent opinion.
This is an interesting concept. Several dandies participated in the gentleman's sports of fencing, and boxing including one of the "greats", the Comte d'Orsay who was well-reputed as a pugilist as well as being a peacock. That combination is really only found in the black boxing circles today what with very flamboyant boxing managers and similarly attired boxers.
If you look at vintage pictures of the boxing matches many of the spectators were very dandyishly attired.
Of course, duelling with weapons is more or less an illegal endeavour these days but essentially a duel would have two people, and probably many spectators. The two gentlemen's valets would stand by with assistance.
While I dislike some of the styles and colors, I like the flamboyance with which many afluent blacks, mainly in the entertainment industry, dress. When you look at the audience of a big money fight, the black members stand out more for their dress and they also happen to be the only ones wearing suits, for the most part. If I see another person in the front row of a big fight wearing dockers and a polo, I think I am going to beat them to a bloody pulp.
YOU WANT A PIECE OF ME???????
How is that for an invitation?
