One of the few events in England where you can see the whole spectrum of clothing options from 'Royalwear', through top hats and tails, to gypsy fashion. I have always enjoyed the Derby meeting. The Oaks is the more civilised day. There is more room to move about for a start.
An ideal place for igents to don their finery.
There were a lot of bad suits with terrible shoes and dodgy haircuts.
Most interesting fashions were the gypsy women, who were dressed like Hollywood versions of streetwalkers - but they were all pushing prams... in stilletoes.... on The Hill.
For some reason gypsy girl children wear long dresses and frilly frocks like a Sunday school outing.
