Re: An Ivy League Style Pictorial Timeline...

I couldn't watch more than a minute of it.  I saw Annie Hall maybe once or twice and I know that I'm supposed to admire Allen's films, but I can't bear that clip.  Did RL do KEaton's gear?  I can't stand that look.  She's kept it up though, eh?

What year was that book published again?  The ol' OHP, I think it was called.

Re: An Ivy League Style Pictorial Timeline...

Shall we?

- Love Story, 1970, Botany 500. The style as it was presented then. You can Google clips. Some scenes are Ivy & therefore The Trad can claim them as their own. Some bust da curriculum's ass wide open.

It's a dire film. Don't watch it sober.

It's post Ivy & Pre-Preppy again and in '70 it is different once more to '77's Annie Hall.

I won't include Dead Poet's Soc. or anything by Whit Stilman in this filmic aspect to our timeline as they were all just costume and well after the event, no matter how pretty you might find them. They lack the sartorial sociological aspect that Love Story & Annie Hall both have. They were retrospective looks at the style being set in earlier decades, not current representations of their times. Their only use is in gauging the tenor of Preppy nostalgia in the years of their production. They do have value to Trad though as Trad is nostalgic through & through it would seem, but their value beyond nostalgia is highly questionable. They may very well be well researched, but they are not the clothes of the years of their production unlike LS & AH.

Jim.

Re: An Ivy League Style Pictorial Timeline...

Animal House is a film I won't mention either.
Great wardrobe - But it is pure (and often wonderful) costume put together after the event. 1978 playing at being 1962. All it tells you is how 1962 was seen in 1978.

It's a secondary source.

Like Stillman's schtick you can love it, but all you are loving is a fantasy presentation of the past.

Re: An Ivy League Style Pictorial Timeline...

More Movies:

- Do Trads like 1981's 'On Golden Pond'? I suspect they might like Henry Fonda in that. I do & I'm no Trad.

Two bad films pre & Post November 1980's OPH:

1) Pre -
'Ordinary People', 1980. Probably filmed in '79.
2) Post -
'Class', 1981. A part of the OPH boom.

Check the real clothes from the years of production & the presentation of the syle. Compare & contrast.
Both have scenes filmed at Lake Forest College:

http://www.lakeforest.edu/about/tour/step01.asp

'Ordinary People' shows the reality of what was to morph into the cliche of the OPH. Be warned, guys wear jeans.
'Class' is a Preppy exploitation film (Prepsploitation?) the clothes still bust the Trad 'curriculum' though.

Go Google for more details on these three. Salted or sweet? Which popcorn is the most Trad?

Best -

james.

Re: An Ivy League Style Pictorial Timeline...

The Press catalogs are great. A few observations -

The 2btns are "mainly stocked in our New York store" or "only in our New York Store".   Fashion forward or just a store size issue?

The 2btns have "high skirted vents"  or "elongated center vent" - in looking at pics from that era it seems that the vents tended to be much shorter than on jackets today.  Perhaps this was an intentional style change on the 2btns that became standard?  I dont see any difference in the length of the vents on sacks today.

Interesting to see the various washable and permanent press fabrics (I like the "Coolie Cloth" label).  I like my blend poplin summer suits but most seem to pooh-pooh them on the boards.
