Re: Groupthink at SF?

the groupthink exists.  on both sides MC and SW&D

but that's normal, and not necessarily a bad thing, tho it does stifle any real creativity and individuality.  But I'd say 90+% of forumites really have no personal style, even if they think they do.  They might have "good" style, but not a true personal one as they'll take what's out there and fit it into their frame of "I like, I dont like" rather than actually searching out a particular type or cut of garment that they've already got their mind set on.

Re: Groupthink at SF?

Since my post on Rubinacci has been a topic of conversation here I thought it may be useful to explain how I arrived at such a decision, this may only strengthen those who proscribe to the idea of fora groupthink, so be it.

I arrived at going the bespoke route after realizing that I liked clothes, well fitting clothes better than most vices (wine, cars, hookers, etc). I believe most that enjoy bespoke are drawn to it for the same reason. I also happen to work in an environment that expects and appreciates fine dress.

I spent the better part of 12 months deciding who to use and the relative advantages and disadvantages. I live in a city that is barren of any bespoke talent and is only frequently visited by two well known SR houses; Henry Poole and Dege. A work associate of mine has used Poole with mix results and has worn two garments to the office that are not to my style. Dege I've heard through channels does quality work so I decided to meet with them on their visit, I realized again that the house style was not to my liking and I was somewhat put off my the customer service or lack thereof.

My first introduction to Rubinacci was via Matt and his many garments, they were pleasing to my eye and Matt was kind enough to point out what he believed to be the likes and dislikes with working with Mariano. In addition, my parents on a couple visits to London and Rome were treated with nothing but the best customer service they had ever recieved by Mariano and his associates. Still, however, I was not entirely convinced about using them. To make a long story short I went on an exhausting search while overseas that included Charvet, A&S, Kilgour, and back to Poole before arriving at my decision to use London House. After dealing now with Mariano personally and getting the finished goods, which I realize are not the favorite of many here, I am happy with my decision. That is not to say that LH will for all time be the house of choice as there are many firms I'd still like to try, it is to say that as a bespoke newbie I went with what felt right from the beginning and hopefully with time and refinement will even be more rewarding.

Re: Groupthink at SF?

Whoa, whoa, whoa WHnay. No one says you shouldn't have used Rubinacci, no one suggests you shouldn't experiment, no one says you need to feel badly or to apologize or anything. We're discussing your suit in the abstract, and I hope responsibly. You should continue to use whomever you want. At most, I think some are unhappy with how few fittings you've gotten and how the di-uniformity of the suit compared to other jackets is a disappointment. But you haven't done anything wrong, except put your trust in a long standing tailoring firm.

I have thrown out whole wardrobes of suits because I found a better tailor and I have had plenty of suits that turned out badly. Until i found my present tailor who does what I like and better than i could imagine every time, i was at the mercy of experimentation. You may or may not have been at the mercy of groupthink but still Rubinacci has a good rep and you should get a good suit. Many of the people here are very picky but it isnt like the suit is unwearable.  Let them fix your suit though. wink

Out of curiosity what has been the reaction around you to the suit when you wear it out?

Re: Groupthink at SF?

Well I've only wore it once and it was well recieved, more importantly I felt good in it. I do however live in the South, it is double breasted and I am under 30 so you can imagine part of the reaction. It does need minor tweaks which will be addressed when I see him next but for a first effort I don't believe its bad, relative to other things I've seen from well regarded makers including A&S. Likely these tweaks won't have to pointed out once I put the garment on in front of him.
