Re: Thom Browne's Sales Come Up Short

TB did nothing to advance himself or his reputation as a serious designer by having those horrific outfits in his shows, especially the chicken costumes, feathers and all.  Maybe he just needed the eggs.  If his intent was to stand out and cause a buzz, well, he achieved that objective.  However, making light of his quirky clothes did not, I'm sure, serve to bolster a strong image with the generally conservative Brooks Brothers and Bergdorf Goodman cusotmers.  In retrospect, TB should have taken a page from Ralph Lauren and other respected designers and place his clothes in a more flattering light.

Re: Thom Browne's Sales Come Up Short

I guess the real problem is a general lack of dimension.  When short is your trademark, the only way to progress is to either go longer or shorter.  Hopefully when things cool off he'll stick with making well-made clothing.  A TB suit at normal length is still fairly "fashion forward."

Re: Thom Browne's Sales Come Up Short

i disagree ^^^....a Thom Browne suit at normal length and proportion doesnt have any aspect of being fashion forward, and unfortunately the wearers of Browne's house cut all want the world to know (those that would know) they are wearing "thom browne".  A properly fitting TB suit is just a nicely made and fitting normal suit that wouldnt raise any eyebrows, which would appeal to the Browne naysayers.

The Browne suit I had was from one of his first seasons (2004) and it fit "properly" and I hemmed it to a normal no-break, and there wasnt that much to it that separated it from most other suits and could easily blend into the crowd.  Which is probably one of the major reasons I sold it, not enough edge for me and I refuse to wear it Browne style with my ankles on display.

I think I might be one of the few people who think Browne's suits aren't edgy enough, and I don't count mis-fitting as being "edgy".

And contrary to popular belief, his suits really arent slim, he just wears them 2 sizes too small (he must read the APC threads on SF) which makes them look slim.  At proper size they are a bit boxy and almost loose imo.  esp Black Fleece which arent slim at all

Re: Thom Browne's Sales Come Up Short

you need some reason to justify $5000 for a RTW suit

It's all about moving units, as Uncle will explain.

GS, some great comments I am grateful. I suspected TB's stuff was really normal (when hemmed normal) but I have no direct experience with his stuff. This just reinforces the point that the "fora" are not a safe place for uninformed people.

Does anyone have any pics of his selections, like an online brochure?

I pretty much agree, Get Smart.  Especially Re. Black Fleece, which is fairly unimpressive when seen in person.  I meant "Fashion Forward" in relative terms, a normal fitting TB compared to say, a normal fitting Tom James, Southwick or Oxxford.  Fashiony in the same way as a high-end Zegna or RL.

Jason's the Cat. I've never heard any crap from him.
... And Bandofoutsiders has the right edge too.
- Then there's Cooly: To be listened to, although in a different way to the chaps above. Cools walks a different path & walks it well.

I'm an old fart now, but to me these young blades are the ones to listen to on the fora to catch what's going on in the next wave of stylism. Who else is there on the MBs of their generation?
