^ The above is a little... you know.
By the time KR did DSMD & I knew about it I'd already found my way to Madison Ave. via Russell Street and I regarded myself as far more plugged into real Ivy style than the Preppy stuff which I then saw KR doing.
Pure snobbery, as I said above.
I equally looked down on Paul Weller's experiments with Ivy in The Style Council.
Jazz was the only music. NYC or Boston Ivy was the only style. All the rest was froth.
- Or so I thought at the time.
These days I'm more mellow -
Ivy for everyone!

That's the Brooks' Golden Fleece I used to bust around town.
I need to check dates. Did I do it B4 him?

The bulk of the Dexy's Ivy look was Brooks.
Shoes were also bought from the Richmond Ivy Shop to add to it all & doubtless JS Covent Garden was paid a visit too. Don't think J. Press was on KR's radar otherwise he'd surely have sported the old flap pocket OCBD.
It's funny - I vaguely remember them doing this at the time (September '85), but in my snobbish way I just discounted them as pop stars & paid very little attention to them. It was only years later that a mate who was/is a KR fan took me through all the photos from DSMD & I was blown away by what Dexys had done back then.

By Sept. of '85 I'd already 'found' JS & was just back from my first Brooks trip in May of that year. I started wearing the Golden Fleece Polo in the spring of '86 therefore, as it was only on my second US trip that I picked up on them. Then in '87 I dumped Brooks for Press in a big way as they seemed more obscure and Ivy-er to me (ie, not so many Anglo touches). I'd known Press since '85, but my tastes were driven more by my mates who were really into Brooks in the early days.
It was all about having things that other people didn't have back then - The latest new stock from JS and Brooks items that others didn't have. Then when I switched to Press it was to have things that my mates (who stayed Brooks loyalists) didn't have... Then I went sniffing 'round The Andover & The Crimson Shop and the Harvard Coop... Then I got those Tweed Ivy style suits made up in Oxford... It never ends... - Obscurity, 'In-The-Know' items, doing The Knowledge about the style even to the extent of blagging my way into The Ivy Shop as a Saturday boy...
Funny old way to spend your life, eh?

I grew out of it - Ivy for Eveyone!
^ I missed Admirable Cod above whom I really rate too. His own take, his own view. Just as it should be.
