Re: Awesome Post of the Day

I really see Marmer as the barometer of 'Trad'.
He lurked.
He read.
He learned.

Reddington & Clemsontiger I'd also class as 'Trad'.

But Jovan & Brownshoe come from another direction.

With 'Trad' we are now into a whole new generation of posters. Probably the 3rd or 4th we've had so far? They've learned the look from AAAT & that's what they're now doing.

Ahhhh well.... Whatcha gonna do?

This is how the game of 'my sainted father' always plays out folks.

Ya sow, ya reap.

I like the "explanation" from BS.

I really like this thread. It is an insight into a whole new world

If I ever decide to become Dirty Harry I will know the best jackets for my magnum. In the UK my magnum would be an ice cream cone.

Re: Awesome Post of the Day

Intepid is rather awesome here:

http://www.askandyaboutclothes.com/forum/showthread.php?t=84291    (post 20)

"Good thread. The subject brings up the reason that there is a fair amount of tension in many of the posts here.

There are a very few of us that post here that are devotees of TNSIL clothing. This has stayed constant over the years. Take a look at a college yearbook from the '50s. There have been a number of those posted here. We don't want to change from that era.

Also, take a look at some of the post WWII Esquire ads that have been posted here. Those that treasure TNSIL items, want to preserve that look in their own clothing.

The problem is that there aren't many of us that fit that category. Ergo, the retailers that once served that market can't survive on the TNSIL market, that is still around.

The retailers are trying to survive by "adapting" to a changing market. This gets into the areas of "Black Fleece", J Crew current offerings, and make for the long list of retailers that are listed here that went out of business.

The few that are left have been sought out here, and are widely known on this Forum, but not well known elsewhere, such as OCLs.

To those of us that understand and treasure TNSIL clothing, the preppy thing looks like a costume, usually in poor taste. To those that are seeking "postmodern trad" the TNSIL era is for their fathers and grandfathers, but not for them. Neither are right, just differing tastes.

This is what puts retailers in such a bind. At one time it was possible to go into BB twice a year, and get absolutely everything that you needed from underwear to a dinner jacket. No more, after OCBD and underwear, you have to go elsewhere.

An interesting anthropological discussion, but one that has no answer that everyone will be pleased with.

The only downside for this Board, is that a few show up that seem to aspire to a a life style that they can buy. It doesn't seem possible.

The Forum was originally about clothing, and to the extent that it veers off into aspirational lifestyles, those that are interested in clothing move elsewhere, or loose interest. These things ebb and flow, and the passing scene usually produces something of interest, if you stay tuned."

See? Even Bill is feeling it too. Ya stick with 'Trad' and ya don't stick with much.

I'd welcome him on our proposed forum.

Yrs,

Hi Brian - It happens to us all. Each new pair of trou is an exercise in trial & error to get the break right I think.
See you next door!
